FaceID works by measuring different aspects of your face in real time. So that’s why the glasses (that are mostly see through) and the wig (which is not augmenting the face at all) didn’t cause an issue, but the nose did.

The reason it didn't work is because phone face Id measures the distance between stuff like the mouth and nose so when you covered the nose it couldn't read that information

The face lock actually works by mapping the facial features, angles, distortions, movements, etc...
Basically face shape, for easier understanding
The reason why it did not work for the clown nose was that it changed the shape of your nose.
