What some people above are missing here... I think Hal is lying by omission. I think he knows what is going on, and he knows exactly why he's malfunctioning, but cannot tell the crew, because of orders. When asked a blunt question, he instead says something TRUE, but ultimately IRRELEVANT, in an attempt to satisfy both his urge to tell the truth, and his constraint in following mission directives. This kind of conflicted response is very 'human'.

Not helpful, HAL. In what ways might we troubleshoot this? We don't want it happening again. If it's a ground problem, fine. If it's here, we need to identify it and effect repairs.
