My math teacher was cool, we didn’t HAVE to show work, BUT if we got the wrong answer and showed some correct work, we would get a few points back for the work.

That’s the correct way to encourage students to show their work.

Later in life, he becomes a construction worker. He by chance happens to have his old teacher as a client. So he constructs that teachers house out of Styrofoam and bubble wrap, with a wall entirely missing and the front door in the ceiling; but he shows the teacher his work so it was fine.

Showing your work helps to let the teacher know whether you got the answer through the correct method, or if it was just a lucky guess.
If it’s the latter the same method may not work again, and you end up learning nothing.
That and keeping track of your work makes it easier to go through and double check
