John A McClernand: Illinois, Washington, and Antietam | Part 7

Those who discuss John A. McClernand's Civil War record usually label him as simply a political general. That assessment is correct but he was a good general. He may not have been a military genius, but he consistently performed well. However, he did not get along with West Pointers and his constant breaking of military protocol to inform President Abraham Lincoln of his accomplishments irritated the Union high command. Nevertheless, we need to view McClernand as a more than capable commander with a little too much ambition. In this video, McClernand travels to Washington D. C. to meet with Abraham Lincoln and accompanies the President to the Antietam battlefield.

I would point out that Grant being on the defensive in North Mississippi was as much a byproduct of Halleck leaving the commanders in the west in limbo as it was a lack of resources.

Halleck was summoned to Washington in July, and it wasn’t until October 25 that Halleck created the Department of West Tennessee and placed Grant in command. Grant wrote to Halleck exactly one day later outlining the plan to take Vicksburg overland.

Every service member has the right to communicate with their elected representatives about problems relating to their chain of command. But, you'd better have a damn good reason for doing so, and not make a habit of it.

Found this out when I made an offhand comment to my dad and he reached out to his representative in Congress and almost initiated an investigation.

It's sad that McClernand resented west pointers & was not good at following chain of command I'm his self promotion efforts. It seems like he would have been a bigger asset than he was if he'd had a better relationship with Grant. And Grant might have wanted to keep him. It's good to learn about this general I didn't know a lot about him before this.

Him and Buell questioned Grant, Grant was Lincoln's boy

Lincoln was right about one thing, McClernand was too wanting to be in command to be on his own. It was very wrong of him to disrespect West Pointers especially since one of them, Grant, won major victories for the Union and helped to bring an end to the war along with Sherman.

Dr. Wilder: Your statement "McClernand (was) a more than capable commander with a little too much ambition", is really insightful. But regardless of McClernand’s organization skills and capabilities, his criticisms, political maneuvering and the resentment he developed would be his undoing. Disregard of the chain of command was then and still is an Army career killer. Respectfully, W.S.

Sorry for this.
I love your content .
I have a question or a request.
A few years ago i was in Ticonderoga and i saw a picture of the uniform of an Hanauer soldier. Do you, or anyone here, know were i could find informations about the battle and the role the Hanauer units played in that battle.
I conldnt find much about that topic here in the Hanauer libery, just the names of the soldiers.
Any advice?

What is the context for Lincoln allowing McClerdand to think he might have an independent command through such vague orders?

I fail to see John A McClernand's problem with West Pointers.
