Imagine stepping into a building with over a thousand years of history, right in the middle of a busy city. Let me take you on a journey through the story of this building - the people who built it, who are remembered in it, and how it's still a place of stillness for everyone.

As an Old Leodiensian, we used to have our Founders' Day service there each year. I think I can still remember the Collect for the Foundation, "We give thee humble and hearty thanks, most merciful Father, for our founders and all our benefactors, especially William Sheafield, William Ermystead, John Harrison and Godfrey Lawson, by whose beneficence this whole School is brought up to godliness and good learning, and we pray that we may by thine aid become profitable members of Church and Commonwealth, for the sake of our Saviour Jesus Christ, Amen."

Very interesting ten minutes. Love the clerical pose! Shout out for the architect R D Chantrell - also responsible for other churches in the area like St Stephen Kirkstall.

This is excellent, capturing that Dr Hook was catholic in his thinking and part of the Oxford Movement within the Church of England with Pusey, Newman, Keble, etc., many feared his proposed design for his new church concentrating on ‘word and sacrament’ hence why the Pulpit and Altar are so elevated. Pusey took this further in the neighbouring parish and church of St Saviour’s, Richmond Hill, consecrated in 1845 (amid even greater controversy) and of towering gothic architecture, colour and stained glass. It has been a privilege for me to sing in the daily Choral Evensongs since 1996 that used to take place in Leeds Parish Church/Minster until relatively recently built on the round of daily prayer within the church that Dr Hook founded.

1:10 that original Leeds Cross would have been outside on it's own as a place to gather to worship before any church was built. It was painted in bright colours and the City Museum has a replica. I learnt a lot I didn't know, thank you Catherine. However, as a place to sit and reflect I prefer St Johns, a proper beautiful hidden gem of an old church with it's own long history.

Wonderful video!
Really good to see that memorial to Captain Lawrence Oates!
Now I can say to people - "I'm just going to watch a Catherine Warr video - I may be some ;)

A'reyt Catherine. A nice bit of Sunday worship in this video. Something local given the more serious approach of your channel's broadened scope.
I could not help but imagine that they were praying for Leeds United today though.
I thought it strange how the reorganised CofE diocese of Leeds now includes the cathedrals of Bradford, Wakefield and Ripon, but Leeds has only a minster, although a very impressive one.
