Come Follow Me Insights (Doctrine and Covenants 51-57, May 17-23)

Taylor and Tyler dive into the Saint's learning about the law of consecration among many other things. For some, it is difficult, while it is easy for others. Many people in the Church confuse the law of consecration with the united order (all things common). Interestingly enough, the law of consecration is something all Temple-worthy members of the Church covenant to live, while the united order is no longer practiced.

0:00 Overview of church history events and progress from May – July 1831. What is the law of consecration? What does the word consecration mean?
5:04 D&C 51: Verses 2-3 Bishop Edward Partridge is given instruction for appointing and regulating stewardships. What is a “want”? See Webster’s 1828 Dictionary for definition in context of the time period.
11:10 Verses 4-9 Scriptural accounts of people living the Law of Consecration show that the people become so prosperous when they live by these principles that all needs and wants are satisfied. The Lord provides instruction for written deeds and property claims.
14:14 Verses 10-12 Emphasis is given on serving in local communities and wards. This is where you will have your greatest influence. All of our resources, including time and talents, become part of the Bishop’s Storehouse to be shared with the Saints.
19:02 Verse 19 Blessings that will come to the faithful, just, and wise steward. Cross reference with Matt 24:45 that asks “Who then is a faithful and wise servant? Jesus responds with the parable of the ten virgins, the talents, and the sheep and the goats. Tyler shares a story about a carpenter who is asked to build one last project.
24:45 D&C 52: Verses 4-8 God is interactively involved in our lives. When his servants are faithful, they will know what to do. He allows our agency and our faithfulness to determine how much more we receive.
30:47 Verses 9-19 The journey towards our destination and who we are becoming is the important part. A pattern for the discerning of spirits it provided. Notice the word IF in verses 15-16 as it is directly connected to agency and obedience. Those enlightened by the Spirit bring forth “fruits of praise and wisdom according to revelations and truth.” (verse 17)
35:16 Verse 37 An example of transgression shows how we can be lead away from the truth “line upon line” in a downward direction.
40:13 D&C 53 Revelation to Sidney Gilbert. The Lord has heard his prayers and has a specific calling for him to forsake the world, preach the gospel and endure to the end. Our callings will often take us out of our comfort zone and lead us out into a “wilderness” for more opportunities to grow.
47:00 D&C 54 Members of the early church are divided on the consecration of properties. The Saints are commanded to repent and become humble. A WO is pronounced on him who broke the covenant. A blessing is pronounced to those who kept the covenant. Key lesson: What or who have we chosen to be our God?
52:43 D&C 54-55 Newell Knight called to Missouri to help Edward Partridge. Revelation to William W. Phelps. He is instructed to first be baptized and then to preach the gospel.
57:11 D&C 56 The clash between men’s agency and God’s work. Verse 4: The Lord “commands and revokes” as needed to allow others their agency and to continue moving the work forward. God respects agency and gives commandments even when He knows some people will not follow through.
1:00:28 Verses 16-17 A WO is pronounced upon both the rich and the poor who do not have a broken heart and contrite spirit, but a blessing is available to those who are poor who are pure in heart.
1:02:50 D&C 57 First revelation given in Jackson County, Missouri. It is “wisdom” in the Lord to build up Zion in Jackson County. Verse 8-15 Emphasis on “planting” themselves and establishing business there.
1:07:45 Why put so much emphasis on building in a temporary location? Perhaps the most important building is not building log cabins and stores but building the character and attributes of disciples of Jesus Christ.
