Springtime Suite - Eric Coates

Eric Coates is often referred to as the king of light music. He wrote some iconic short orchestral pieces, often used in radio, television and film. And although light music was very popular in the early half of the 20th century, it was also much maligned by critics who considered it to be not "proper" music.

But far from it, Coates' music is just as musical and rewarding to listen to as larger symphonic pieces. Coates had the ability to create memorable and delightful tunes sprinkled with gloriously lush and colourful harmonies.

His Springtime Suite is no exception. It describes in 3 movements, the jollity and happiness of the coming of spring. The first movement - Fresh Morning - is a dotted-rhythm pastorale, fizzing with excitement and joy. The second movement - Noonday Song - is a heart-wrenchingly beautiful ballad, with a deeply emotional melody, backed with the most sublime harmonies.

The suite, like many others, is a true masterpiece and most certainly IS "proper" music. It was a delight to arrange and play - I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
