Professor Andrea Morello will blow your mind with how quantum computing and the Schrödinger equation relates to financial arbitrage.

I have almost two hours of quantum computing discussion coming soon!

I have always known my bank account is a quantum system. The morning after a night out of the town, sometimes my money is there, sometimes it isn't.

Since I couldn't remember it on the spot, I mention it now: what I was describing is called the Black-Scholes model:
A description of how it relates to the Schroedinger equation can be found here:

No idea what that was about, but if you're excited, Dave, then I'm excited too.

This man is amazing, you should really watch the Veritasium video's with him if you haven't yet.

What's all this collapse of the wave function stuff?

That's why money disappear from my hand once I know where it is...

Funny how the same quantum formula pops up. Just like a Fibonacci sequence reoccurring in nature.

You're hanging with Andrea Morello - Awesome!

What they're after at the moment is speed.
Brokers vie for dominance of the operation of their buy/sell algorithms using faster and faster puters and networks.
Modelling is how they develop the algorithms.
Speed is how they win using them.

2 hours of quantum computing.... I simply can't wait.
Although I am "only" an electronics engineer, I was first admitted to the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, to study physics. I ended up becoming an engineer, but I am still following my great interest for atom physics. Can't wait to see the discussion.

That IS fascinating. Now I just have to times my savings by an irrational fraction for the right period and coincide that with perfect quantum arbitrage timing to get the best rates globally. Who says making money with backs is hard? Back pat for the Prof there.

Looking forward to the full discussion!

Okay we take something random simulate it with something truly random and expect that the random thing helps predict the other random thing. Sounds like a genius way to get funding for quantum research ;-)

Professor Morello is a wonderful science communicator. :)

At first I thought this was intended as satire / parody, or that it was posted mockingly. After listening several times to what he had to say, I now realize that he does make some sense, although on a very cerebral level.

I've looked into the quantum computing, and the best sense I can make of it is that it may have an application in that quantum systems are supposed to be in all states at one moment. I think you have to mask out things by adding quantum sources etc. Then you could perhaps solve a large set of things simultaneously. I have seen some other explanations that were like it was just a multi level bit, but that is not worth the effort. All in all it is pretty niche and needing to keep a chip at absolute zero is not a plus with an error rate.

Now that was interesting! I’d really love to know which finance model Andrea is talking about. Anyone know?

'might' be able to ... when ? How many qubits would be needed to accomplish (and beat non-quantum computers) what the guest is describing ?
