This episode of Engines of The Pere Marquette will be discussing the mikados. These had a high spot on my original Top 10 Extinct American Steam Locomotives, were the largest fast freight locomotives on the PM until the Berkshires, the 3rd largest PM locomotives, are one of the PM's most well known extinct locomotives, and one of the most interesting in the fleet. This was also one of 2 locomotive wheel arrangements on the PM to have a striking resemblance to their Nickel Plate counterparts, the other being both railroads’ 2-8-4s.

The French 1-4-1R class locomotives are also USRA light mikados built by both Alco, Lima and Montreal locomotive works there are at least 2 operational in sweden, one even has its original American whistle. And no smoke deflectors.

Great episode! For some reason, I seem to be more focused on the tenders of these engines, as the designs of the water tanks and coal bunkers seems to be unique for almost every class, and certainly unlike most of the tenders I've seen for other photos of the Pere Marquette.

The 2-8-2 Mikado type is a expansion of the 2-8-0 Consolidation with a larger firebox that means it needs a trailing wheels creating a 2-8-2

As à Britain living in France I know very little about US steam locomotives. I’d really like to see you do a video about the USRA S160´s we had in Europe after WW2 and the 141R Mikados supplied to the French national railways (SNCF) from 1945. We also had US 0-6-0T shunters (switchers for you guys) in the UK which lasted into the 1960’s with BR as dockyard shunters. Several of all these classes of locos are preserved and in working order in France and the UK. I had the privilege of a cab ride in SNCF 141R-820 a few years ago. Great locomotive.
