My first talk show with a live audience in the USA during my early days of activism. Thank you, Phil Donahue. You are a gentleman.

Watching in 2024 and Phil died last week. He was the best. So kind.

I wish we had this kind of discourse again. You don't hear yelling or hate.
This is why manners & respect is so important to teach your children & to lead by example.
I love watching these old episodes! Such nostalgia 😊

I remember when this aired. I'm a 60 year old woman. I admired your beauty and grace then, and now.

I love how she’s answering the negative questions. With positivity, a smile, and a little humor

Such a gracious response the hostile questions. Well done. You've been a great role model for everyone, trans or not.

Wow people were so much kinder back then. How did we go backwards? She's beautiful and intelligent. I hope she's happy wherever she is today.

It's hard to believe how long ago this was! I took a father/son trip to New York City in June 1990. It's the only time in my life I traveled alone with my Dad. We were at NBC Studios taking a tour when a producer opened a hallway door and randomly chose us as recipients of last-minute tickets to the Phil Donahue Show. As a young gay man, Phil was one of my heroes. Dad was the son of a Baptist minister, and we had no idea what guest was in store for us. It was awkward, but one of those benchmark moments of life. Until now, I've never seen the broadcast! Decades later, after I married my partner of 20+ years during a return trip to Manhattan, my father was surprisingly supportive. I give a little credit for that to Mr. Donahue!

Ms Cossey, you were the first trans person I remember having a huge impact on me and educating me on your situation. Thank you for being a warrior in an era when there was no support for trans people. You are a hero.

How can you hate such a wonderful person ❤

Wow! FIERCE. For someone who didn't want to be the one, and by that I mean you wanted privacy, you carried the torch with such flare, dignity and a sense of humour. I truly admire this and you. You are a LEGEND.

She is absolutely stunning here. The fact that she stayed graceful and respectful through all those rude questions and statements from the audience was amazing, something I know I would NOT have been able to do. That entire audience knew damn well that she blew them ALL out of the water and we’re just jealous 💁🏻‍♀️

This young lady at 35:40 shut ALL rude transphobic people in the room down! What a beautiful and understanding woman 💖

She/you remind me SO much of Princess Diana...facial mannerisms, eyes, body language. I remember this from when I was a young gay kid growing up in Wisconsin. SO glad to find it again!!

I remember this episode when it aired. I was desperate to find another trans person. I transitioned at 24 in 1992. The introduction to her book ( My Story) still makes me cry like a baby because it hits so close to home.
