Recently Christian McBride was asked, ”what’s the best way to strengthen jazz music and build the audience?” It’s a pretty simple answer according to McBride. “Make it fun, ” he suggests. “There’s a certain human spiritual fun aspect about this music, every other so-called genre of music kind of focuses on it. We get way too deep in the weeds of intellectualizing, analyzing. There’s this subliminal message that you’re smarter than the rest of them if you like this music. We gotta cut that out.”

I became completely obsessed when i first saw this, i wasnt even into jazz at the time. I listened to it hundreds of times, I started learning what i could by ear because i couldnt believe how good it felt and i had to learn it. I finally got a double bass and have been playing for two months now. Since discovering this video ive fallen in love with jazz and the double bass, ive connected with my local brighton jazz scene and have sat in 3 times now at jam sessions. Christian and Russell are my heroes and i really hope one day ill get to thank them in person for changing my life. I met Patrick Bartley the other day and he tells me Russell is just as obsessed with skyrim as i am haha. Also ive got to thank Emmet, ive seen hundreds of these videos and i credit this show for exposing me to jazz as one of the most incredible art forms to delve into, it makes me incredibly grateful to be alive today to be able to experience this music.

I remember when Joe Henderson said of a young Christain McBride that "he was the most tallented bass player to come along since Paul Chambers.” He held up that role and is bringing the next gen up with Russell.

I used to listen to rock and roll...I remember that I asked a friend:" How about bass guitar solos?"...And now: two masters playing " Birks work" on two basses!!! And what a groove ❤❤❤❤
