Space Smash: The Debris Circling the Earth | FULL DOCUMENTARY

Today, the problem of rubbish in space has become a nightmare for astronauts. The amount of debris in space has been steadily increasing for the past 20 years as more and more satellites have been placed in orbit and numerous missiles have been tested. In 2009, two working satellites collided sending tons of new space trash into orbit travelling at an incredible speed.

This kind of event creates a vicious circle as each time debris collides, more and more waste is produced. All those involved in the conquest of space are now forced to monitor the clouds of waste constantly and to divert their working satellites in case of emergency. But many satellites have been “forgotten” and will inevitably cause collisions. Currently, all efforts to minimise or avoid this debris are inadequate and may have heavy consequences on our satellites and other activities on Earth. It’s high time we cleaned up our space mess!

Throughout the world, engineers have been coming up with more and more inventive schemes to clear the space trash and put their inventions to the test: magnetic nets in Japan, disintegrating lasers in Australia, garbage collecting satellites in Switzerland, waste hunting vessels in Europe and gas atomizing rockets in the USA. Star wars will not happen… but the war on waste has been declared.

I also watched it live in the living room of my girlfriend along with two other friends in Cincinnati, Ohio. I could not believe what we were seeing. In July 1969, I was a sophomore in high school on summer break. I will never forget it.

might i recomment watching *"Planetes"* from '99 ?!
its an animated series about "orbital space junk cleapup crews" pretty good overall, specially for the "realistic" take on this kind of job!

This documentary is hardly outdated especially with all the tests going on with ASAP weapons. A cube set with a thruster pack could be attached to derelict satellites to push them out of orbit to re-enter in a desired area.

The solution to this problem appears to be the creation of a "space garbage truck, " whose function would be to collect the space garbage and detritus and either de-orbit the mess or somehow neutralize it.

It was a wonderful documentary about that scientific and space technology problem ( debry- space garbages) that returns them to the earth 🌎 by several cleaning methods... thank you (Slice full Doc) documentary channel

Any- and everywhere humans go, we leave garbage, with no consideration for the future - it's really sad

A cascade event is inevitable... we have to prepare for this .

They could have waited and filmed Gravity w/o the need for props.

We need a gigantic piece of flypaper let loose. Stretched out like a sail.

Charge ANYONE launching things into space a cleaning fee…..like Airbnb…..LOL. We already have the tech to sweep space clean just not the dough.

We are very good at polluting everything...including space.

All satellites should be designed by law to de orbit themselves over the oceans at the end of use and if possible when damaged. Companies like SpaceX should ( maybe they already are ) make sure any companies wanting to use their rockets to launch their and other companies satellites into orbit, have a proven de orbit capability before launching. Maybe even have multiple de orbit systems per satellite for reliance.

the technology to clean all that debris is too easy to develop

Wonderful video. Thank you for posting.
Radical idea ( Don't hate...think about it)
what if killer drone type satellites (here's the radical part) carried a mini nuke?
Blast area of about a single square city block at best...most likely much much smaller in reality with today's tech.

There wouldn't be an EMP threat at these altitudes, there would be no radiation threat of any sort since space is chock full of all sorts of radiation anyway. (I would think)

These dronesat's could be programed to catch dead satellite's that are near each other in that orbit and then fash nothing, next thing ya know there's a clean area/void in orbit. They would also be able to change course to better suit the mission as well.

I would be very interested myself to see if debris swarms (orbital clouds?) of smaller bits could be vaped in one go. As I said radical idea since I know folks have been spooked by nukes all their life's. I have had this idea for a long time truth be known...

Going to need shields for protection. John Searl discovered his Inverse gravity vehicle while in operation developed a magnetic field around the vehicle acting like a shield. Maybe that might be something worth looking at for NASA

Earth will soon have a ring around this planet like Saturn

At around two minutes you said there were nearly a million objects larger than half an inch and at 11:30 the lady said there are only 36, 000 objects. That’s a big difference. You also failed to mention Skylab which was a pretty big object to fall.

The exponential increase of dead space junk will eventually enclosed the Earth in an impenetrable "cloud" which will make future launches too dangerous to undertake. We will be trapped, with no way to get us out into the cosmos. IT'S NO JOKE.

Space junk will increase exponentially, but in many separate exponential events that will eventually turn all satellites into fine particulates🧐
