Will we ever see Nokia shining again?
Показать описание
Today we will be talking about Nokia. This video will have 3 parts:
1-Quick info about the history of Nokia.
2-Look at the chart of the stock of Nokia and the balance sheet of the company.
3- Political factors which can affect Nokia within next 4 years.
Nokia is a Finnish multinational telecommunications and information technology company founded in 1865. Company has been operating in various industries over the past 155 years.
Initially the company was funded as a pulp mill which produced various products deriving from wood, including toilet paper. Yes, at some point Nokia even produced toilet paper in the 1960s.
Company gradually moved towards the mobile telephony industry and became a big contributor towards developing: GSM, 3G and LTE standards.
At one point Nokia was the largest worldwide vendor of mobile phones.
Who doesn’t remember Nokia's phones?
In 1998 alone, the company had sales revenue of $20 billion making $2.6 billion profit. By 2000 Nokia employed over 55,000 people, and had a market share of 30% in the mobile phone market worldwide, almost twice as large as its nearest competitor, Motorola. The company was operating in 140 countries as of 1999. Between 1996 and 2001, Nokia's revenue increased five fold, from $7.94 billion to $37.85 billion.
Nokia had a touch screen and email technology but those were never used in Nokia's phones.Their success was huge and so overwhelming that they had to split their stock. Single Nokia share was split in 64 shares in 1995. That made sense at the time because the stock price would have surged above $3,700 per share in 2001 without these splits.
Nokia's success was also the beginning of their fall from top position as a mobile phone leader. Their success blinded them to the point that they didn’t adapt to changing needs of the consumers who wanted to have more and more services at their hands.
Nokia's management was slow and clumsy with implementing new features to the phones and at the same time we had IPhone and Android being introduced in 2007 and 2008. Gradually Nokia started losing ground in mobile phones sales and after 2008 Nokia never regained their grip in the mobile phones market. They are trying to come back by making mobile phones right now. The recent one is Nokia 8.3 which has mixed reviews.
Today Nokia is completely different company oriented in providing mostly network solutions and 5G network upgrades for mobile providers all over the world.
