Adam Grant: What frogs in hot water can teach us about thinking again | TED

Why are humans so slow to react to looming crises, like a forewarned pandemic or a warming planet? It's because we're reluctant to rethink, say organizational psychologist Adam Grant. From a near-disastrous hike on Panama's highest mountain to courageously joining his high school's diving team, Grant borrows examples from his own life to illustrate how tunnel vision around our goals, habits and identities can find us stuck on a narrow path. Drawing on his research, he shares counterintuitive insights on how to broaden your focus and remain open to opportunities for rethinking. (If you think you know something about frogs, watch until the end and get ready to think again.)

The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). I find it extremely hilarious how much comments are hating ted and talking abiut the frog thing...not realizing he said it's a myth at the end!

Great insights! I guess I need to discard another bit of conventional wisdom: “Old dogs can’t learn new tricks.” (Speaking as an old dog myself.)

“Good teachers introduce new thoughts but great teachers introduce a new way of thinking” . Judging by this standard you are beyond great. Indeed as a newly graduate, my premature goal and identity really trouble me a lot in face of my transitional period from college to society. I tried to rethink but what’s the point of rethinking if my state of mind and perception of everything around remain the same? now I will try to rethink as you show me in this video. Thanks!

Why would anybody kill a frog that way. I’d be more worried about the human who would be so cruel. I would rather be stupid than cruel.

He lost me in the first minute talking about climate change. He obviously hasn’t studied weather history or data science. Maybe he will study it as I have for 100s of hours and see if it is like a frog.

Floating in this cosmic jacuzzi, we are like frogs, oblivious to the water starting to boil. No one flinches. We all float face down.

If only we had a place we could go weekly to meditate on our own weakness, and rethink our own lives in the spirit of humility. One that encouraged us to be less selfish, less judgemental, and to see the sometimes hidden virtues in others. I realized a few years ago that religious practice is less about belief, and more about the framing operating system it installs. This talk reminded me why I appreciate the many good churches.

Providing a list of those researches in description or comment would help some people distrust you less.

Hard to watch anything with him in, despite the often interesting message. Because of his constant need to try and force a smile.

Love everything you put out Adam! 🙏❤️

Thanks for all the research and effort that happens behind the scenes to create these clear, relevant frameworks. Super valuable in life and work!

Biggest takeaway for me:
Changing your mind can FEEL like admitting you’ve made a mistake. And we let the fear of mistakes hold much power over our decisions (and lives) 🤯
