I just assumed the decontamination plasma burned everything inside, as you can see scorch marks on Celia too. Yeah, don't want to be in blast range when the decontamination shield comes up.

Always wondered why there was an explosion in the storyboard...

I think it was more likely the explosion in the building before 9/11 considering that a gym bag held the explosives

Another notable change is lilo and stitch with the ship chase sequence at the end it was originally a plane

I guess that explains the shape of the bag when the CDA personnel was holding it and them saying "this was recovered at the scene".

A lot of movies, shows, and video games had to be changed because of 9/11. Sam Rami's Spider-Man is a popular example. Any scenes that had the twin towers were edited out. Even the teaser trailer was pulled from theaters because it showded Spider-Man catching a helicopter full of bank robbers by making a big web between the twin towers. Heck they were even considering giving Lord of the Rings The Two Towers a new name. Thankfully they didn't, but i imagin they had to fight for them to keep the original title.

Honestly, the dome thing is scarier. Everyone knows what an explosion is, and humans are capable of it. But the monsters being capable of something we as humans aren’t, that being the plasma dome, adds something to this scene.

In the french dub, just before the plasma dome appears, Mike says: "It's not if the neighborhood was going to explode". Coincidence ?

I always thought the plasma field was like a giant quarantine barrier, since human children were seen as contaminated and infectious.

So Mike and Sully were shocked because they almost got totally trapped there, and they got to see just how serious the presence of a human kid in the area really was.

Honestly, as a kid, I never understood the plasma dome and something always felt off about it. Now I know why

That explains why the storyboard for this scene depicted a mushroom cloud as opposed to the plasma dome. The Scream Team book also keeps this original idea as it mentions the restaurant exploding into smithereens as Mike and Sully flee the scene.
