Comping Rhythms for Beginners

Get access to the Jazz 101 course and a whole load more!

In this video, I show you some basic comping rhythms for beginners. Comping is just a shortened term for 'Accompanying' and in the context of jazz, it just means to play the chords in a varied and interesting rhythm to support a melody line or solo.

I'm using the software 'iRealPro' to practice but you could just use a metronome if you don't have that app.

I start by showing you some very basic rhythms and then we begin to develop them further. Once you get the hang of them you'll find you just start coming up with your own rhythms and you'll have the ability to play around with the chords without having to count.

If you have any questions, just leave a comment below.

Thank's for this very intelligently made jump-start!
It's the perfect counterplay to 2 and 4, which reinforces this great, great "swing-feeling". Thanks very much!
