Project History & More Info:

If you make these parachutes, you'll be able to use them with Rockets, Sky Balls, or even action figure toys as well.

I was amazed to see that 8 parachutes could be made from 1 dollar-store table cover, effectively making them less than $0.15 each.

I made a few small modifications to the parachute design, and developed it into a project video for the rocket building series, with approval from Ritchie.

These parachutes can serve multiple purposes, from rockets, to sky balls, to action figures, and more.

I found some techniques to manufacture the parachutes so they can be produced quite quickly, and they typically take me about 5 minutes each, once I get in the groove.

For these parachutes I used scotch-tape, like Ritchie did in his project, however after playing with them extensively, this seems to be the most common point of failure. In the future I'll probably try using colored electrical tape, a bit of duck-tape, or another flexible rubber tape with more adhesion for better durability.

Either way, they are super easy to fix if they come apart. All you have to do is tape them back together! :)

Have fun!

Pro tip : if you have no table cloth cut a garbage bag in half it is slightly smaller but will work with the randomizer rocket

I made this parachute today for my homemade rocket. It looks great, and seems to work well on the ground! Thanks for the great video

Awesome tutorial Grant! I really like your folding and cutting technique - much faster than cutting out each corner of the canopy. Well done!   -Ritchie

I just made an 8.5 inch round parachute for a small model rocket that I built with a kit. It came with a streamer but I wanted a parachute. I can't wait to try it out.

I made these with a large group of school kids yesterday and they loved them, they played with them most of the day and i was on the school roof most of the day
I did have to change the way they make them for the kids but worked out the same, thanks for the idea.

Hi Grant,
Videos are Great. I am making a rocket similar to the randomizer with my 8th grade son. The randomizer turned out to be undoable with materials available in Germany. With imagination we are making something close. We are trying to make the parachutes now. Again we cannot get the table cloths you use, which has caused us some trouble. In order to help those outside of the US, it would be cool if you could always give the exact measurements of the materials you are using. This then makes it possible to find substitutes much more easy and make less mistakes. For example, we are using a poncho instead of the table cloths for our chutes. In the video we did not catch that you were making the cuts on 2 layers of the table cloths until using the technique on our single layer poncho to find that we did not get a cross, but only a half of one 😂 . Anyway, thanks for making the videos. We are having a lot of fun.

Is Scotch tape really strong enough for these parachutes? That's rather surprising.

My parachute worked way to well. The wind took it like 1/2 mile away from the launch site and me and my friends looked for it for like 20 muintes. But it was worth it because the parachute worked.
