It is NOT a measurement of happiness, but satisfaction. When you have low expectations, then it is not hard to exceed them. There are people in the world that would be ecstatic with indoor plumbing. When you set a low expectation for what you can achieve in life then it is not hard to be "satisfied" with mediocrity. Unfortunately, or fortunately, Americans always believe in pushing the envelope.
