I'm not sure if someone had said it before, but I haven't read it anywhere else.

Father of a 1½ year old, what the pediatrician told us is that water itself isn't bad, but for every ml of water your baby us drinking, he's also drinking less of his mother's milk. Water doesn't have nutrients or anything, so you're just filling the baby with nothing, and he won't be hungry to drink it's milk or formula anymore, which will get him sick and probably unalige him.

Btw, there are evil people taking advantage of it. I heard of a babysitter story where the babysitter punished a 5-7 year old by making her drink LARGE amounts of water. The child died and the parents caught it on camera

Ok i thought this sounded a bit farfetched, so i googled it myself and as i expected this needs a bit of fact checking. There is some truth to it but here is what i found about babies drinking water.

1. Babies can absolutely drink water

2. Like for adults drinking too much water can be dangerous and dilutes sodium levels. Because they are so small it is easier for this to happen and young babies cant really combat the dilution.

3. Another reason you may not want to give water to a baby is because it will not feel thirsty and get too little milk/baby formula which contain nutrients the child needs.
