Miles Morales is a Terrible Spider-Man - an Across The Spider-Verse Review

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse had incredible animation, some fun music and interesting characters and concepts. But aren't you getting sick and tired of all of these modern belligerent heroes? Most of the characters, even the adults, are doing incredibly stupid things. But I take real issue with "heroes" like Miles Morales deciding to do his own thing, going against all conventional wisdom and advice from people much older and wiser than him. He turns out to be an antagonist in this movie, thwarting the true hero Miguel O'Hara.

Gotta love when a moniker defined by suffering for the sake of others is taken by a character ready to destroy an entire universe to save one person... that would die anyway when the universe collapses...

This would be valid if miguel’s theory isn’t wrong. The thing is that the movie has at multiple times contradicted miguel o’hara’s canon event theory one of the more obvious one being gwen’s father quitting

I’m sorry but you seem to have a massive misunderstanding of the story. If Miles is truly an anomaly, if Miles becoming Spider-Man wasn’t a canon event… then why didn’t his universe already collapse? Even if the universe would collapse by saving his father, Miles rejects that ultimatum. He rejects having to choose between 2 evils and tries to find a better alternative. Do you genuinely believe Spider-Man would stand by and let people die just to keep the world running? I can’t see the future, but I believe the reveal is going to be that Miguel’s understanding of the multiverse is fundamentally flawed. This whole situation can also be seen as a not-so-subtle response to people claiming Miles “isn’t Spider-Man” as well as the idea of a strict “canon” formula that every story must follow.

listen, miles isn't risking anything. If miles is the original anomaly, and wasn't supposed to be spiderman. Just use your brain for a second. His universe didn't fall apart, his spiderman died but nothing fell apart, and even hobie who is someone VERY smart. Someone smart enough to make his own dimensional travel watch at the end for gwen, even HE thinks miguel is full of bs and doesnt agree with what theyre doing. Once he finally found a reason that miguels theory was bs he left it to miles to show them. What im trying to say is that I think Miles' canon can fluctuate based on what he decides he wants to do as he was bitten by a different dimension spider, who know's what he can and can't do at this point. I think he's right, we haven't seen full proof of miguel's theory other than him saying how his universe fell apart, even though the canon technically wasn't broken and the him of that universe DID die.

Eh I like your argument but I will have to disagree, Miles is a teenager, barely been Spider-Man for a long time, and if his points against why he shouldn't let his father just die was random bs, at the end of the movie we wouldn't see the group of people standing next to Gwen who are on his side. He still embodies who Spider-Man is

i think miguel's theory will be ultimately proven wrong. He's a very interesting character and a very very interesting antagonist because we completely see his intentions and perspective, and the righteous intents, as well as the morally ambigous side of them. Also miles is literally 15, you cant expect him to be chill when told his dad is literally destined to die.

I think it's tough to make a call on this until the next movie when we see how his actions affect the story

Brother did you even watch the movie? What are you even on about "no consequences"? He ended up stranded in another universe and might be the reason Pav's world gets destroyed. And you go on and on about how he doesn't respect authority figures as if he wasn't going out of his way to try and impress Miguel or do right by his parents.

Sure he's rebellious at times but there's 2 very good reasons for that.
1) he has a secret identity to keep from his parents which makes it difficult to always be on the same page with them and fight crime at the same time, try as he might.
2) Miguel gave him (a kid) an impossible ultimatum. Miguel might not even be right about the canon events (which they hint at a lot) so it's very much understandable why he did what he did.

Like come on man, at least try to understand the film you paid to see if you're gonna make a video about it. These criticisms don't even make any sense

Missed the whole point of the movie. It’s abt the fact that u can change your future, that u can be different from your expectations that everyone else puts on you. Also how tf is Spider-Man a criminal if “does what he wants to do” that’s what he’s been doing since the Toby Mcquire series, since Amazing Spider man

I think you clearly missed the holes I’m Miguel’s story. He’s making all these assumption from a sample of one, forced everyone in the spider society to adhere to his perspective, and is closed off to alternate explanations. That is no hero. The theme of the movie is to not let others define you. Obviously we want the main characters actions to reflect that and we root for him and expect his decision to be right. The theme transcends the obstacles because it’s literally the point of the movie. Oh and by the way, he didn’t go rescuing his dad on a whim, he realized that being an anomaly means that he’s not technically Spider-Man, so canon events don’t apply to him. A story is not realistic simulation of what should happen when you make decision x—it’s about leaving a parting thought on the audience about the human experience. The endearing thought at the pivotal scene is that miles chose his father over the universe, and the intention is to inspire the audience to care for their father and to be more appreciative of the time they spend with him. I feel bad that you engage with entertainment in this needlessly pedantic way. Filmmakers don’t make movies with people like you in mind, so it’s no wonder why you think this “trend” is everywhere

Bro I do not agree the point of the movie is to show how he grew as Spider-Man

This really feels like a troll review especially the part where you essentially say This will corrupt the youth

My take from the movie is that miles created spot accidentally which makes it his responsibility to stop him. Spot is trying to become powerful to prove to Spider-Man he is a worthy villain. He wants to prove his point that he is not just the "villain of the week" and he also wants to ruin Spider-Mans life as he feels Spider-Man has ruined his. Because of this Spot will end up killing Miles's dad and of course Miles doesn't want that so he is going to try and stop it from happening. Miguel is worried this will cause a universe ruining event and that all canon events have to happen or everything will go wrong. Miles is already a walking contradiction to that theory because Spider 42 was supposed to bite Miles 42 but didn't and that universe was not destroyed. Yes canon events are basically a placeholder for a Spider-Persons life but it doesn't exactly have to follow through the exact same way every time. We clearly don't have all the information on how canon events work because Miguel didn't even disrupt a canon event he just kept living as Miguel in a different universe. It's important to note that Miles is not a brat that does whatever he wants but is literally a superhero saving lives. He doesn't disobey his parents just because. He does it to be Spider-Man, a superhero that makes the city a better place. Miles is also still a kid just figuring things out and trying to do the right thing/save everybody. There are many points in the movie that show Miguel does not have the full understanding of Canon Events. Take Gwen's dad for example. She went back to him and learned she indirectly saved him by making him want to quit the police force and that did not destroy her reality. I think what we are meant to get out of this is that these things are not set in stone and only when you try to change the past is when things go wrong. I think there is nothing wrong with wanting to change the future especially when it has to do with saving a life specifically ones own father. As for the theory that Miles can do what ever he wants and get away with it and even though he's wrong just because he's the protagonist things will work out for him, I think that theory is wrong. The movie goes out of its way to make Miles create his own problems that impact his own life in major ways like his dad dying/city being destroyed by spot. That is why Miles must grow as a character and be more cautious to not repeat his mistakes but learn from them and also clean up the mistakes he has already made. We are going to have to wait until Beyond The Spider-Verse, awesome movie title by the way, to see just how canon events fully work and if Miles will really have to say goodbye to his dad to save his reality.

Did you watched that movie? If so did you watched it really carefully? You don't even remember names besides people who were in first movie. You missed the point and fact that Miles is teeneger and literally spiderman. If they ground him what he is supposed to do? I won't say more since everyone already tear you up and you still don't get it but "withouth consequences"? Because of him, Spot was created even in first movie and now he needs to get him. His consequences. He is just a Teenager

I see someone hasn't been paying attention Gwen's father stop being police captain and her universe was safe so that proves they can be broken, what happen to Spider-Man India world was an incursion. Remember What If when Supreme Strange broke an absolute cannon point event? His Christine was always meant to die but he prevented that breaking down reality. Remember M.o.M? They said if you leave a foot print big enough in another universe it'll break down. At which Wanda, Dr. Strange and America left a big foot print.
