MercurySteam's Next Metroid [Reupload]

This is a re-release of an older video. I wanted to fix the graphics and sound issues on that video and also to try out a new format for forecast graphics at the end - let me know what you think compared to the old style (which is also in the video for comparison at 1:44). And don't worry, there are new videos coming soon.

The end of Metroid Dread leaves the Metroid franchise open. After Metroid Prime Remastered and Metroid Prime 4, there is a good chance we will see another Mercury Steam Metroid but will it be Metroid 6 or a redemption for Metroid Other M - Other M 2? We look at the issues and consider some of the people involved.

I am super excited for a Metroid Dread sequel with the same team and style. They absolutely nailed it. Not only did they get the Metroid theme right, they evolved it, and brought it up to date. Hopefully they get an easier development cycle this time if the project is green lit.

When Nintendo did a poll of fans on which Metroid game was their favorite, Other M wasn't even listed as an option. I don't think they have an interest in revisiting the concept.

Metroid Other M was definitely also disliked for its gameplay mechanics - but not for anything that is inherent in being a third person 3D game. It was a 3D game that forced you to play with the dpad, required you to stand still and point at the screen to use missiles, and had annoying pixel hunt segments, to name a few of the more egregious things things. I would love for them to give a third-person 3D Metroid another shot though, if for no other reason than it's the least-explored framework for the series. But I also really want a new 2D Metroid, and don't think it would be wise to throw a monkey wrench right after Dread's successful resurgence, so I'm expecting Metroid 6.

I think team Ninja should be allowed to totally remake other M. And make the story more cohesive with the existing lore.

It's pretty good. The pace in which you talk is consistent and clear, I had no issues with sound in this video. The forecast graphic is fine, it doesn't need to be too flashy but it should stand out.

I think the team they should tap for a third person Metroid is Platinum Games particularly leaning into their experience with Nier Automata in how it did 2D in the gameplay a tone or times in game but also was very much a 3D action game.

I like your new graphic for the forecasting! I think it conveys what you're doing really clearly

I could easily see a MercurySteam sequel to Dread releasing in 2026, specifically in the latter half to distance itself from Prime 4 which will likely release at or near the next system's launch

I kinda hope we get a remake of super metroid. Mercurysteam have already remade a metroid game and know what makes metroid "metroid" due to dread so i feel like they know how to handle what to do, what not to do, what to change and what to keep.

I'm pretty sure a disaster like Other M has no chance of ever happening again, espically now that Nintendo has Sakamoto on a leash.

Very nice video, I agree with your opinions! Also, small thing, I really like the Detective Pikachu icon you use! It's one of my favorite 3DS games!

Other M will never be replicated, and Nintendo is wise to scrape it under the couch.

I feel like I have made the Capcom, Konami mistake before in my own life, so I get it.

More Metroid is always welcome.

Other M's gameplay flaws were pretty significant too. The d pad controls for a 3d platformer were awkward and uncomfortable to use, same with the first person switching. The scan sections were very bad and total pace breakers. Forced linearity for no reason a lot of times doors lock behind you preventing exploration. Getting upgrades through authorisation felt underwhelming compared to previous games letting you acquire them yourself.

Other flaws were the music being very underwhelming, unmemorable and feeling unfitting for metroid.

When you say new Metroid are you counting potential remakes too? Because if Dread & Prime 4 are successful at bringing in new fans to the series that would be the time to capitalize on the brand. I don't think that it would be a bad idea, and Mercury Steam already remade Returns, so they got the base done. Now this is a wishlist not expecting it sort of thing, but I think it would be cool to have two 2 packs; remakes of Zero Mission & Returns first, then Super & Fusion, done in Dread engine and told from a perspective of Samus remembering her past missions going forward to wherever 6 takes place (starts right from her escape of ZDR)

Next Game will be a Super Metroid Remake. I have faith that Mercury Steam and Nintendo will keep the essence and physics of the game just with an updated art style and redesign.

A Super Metroid remake, Forecast, Sir. Mr. Sakamoto wants MercurySteam to work toward their dream of a Metroid Fusion remake, one title at a time.

If everything is in place already, hopefully they'll show it in the upcoming Nintendo Direct next month in June 2024.

Just for something important Mercury Steam should put Metroid Samus Returns on the Switch, that would sell like hotcakes, that or upcoming Switch 2, Metroid Samus Returns on 3DS is a masterpiece & still is so is Metroid Dread, Metroid Other M should give a second chance by Team Ninja.

I think a Metroidvania crossover would be interesting considering Samus is basically a vampire now

Me and a friend recently started playing Other M together, so far we are over 2 hours in. Other M had interesting ideas, but executed almost every single one poorly. Ironically, it was when we were watching Other M's terrible story that we were having the most fun. To describe the gameplay the best I can while being brief, its like playing a mage build in Elden ring with half baked controls, enemies without unique attacks, and a camera taken from Skylanders that cosplays as Metroid Prime 3 every 5 minutes. Combat is too simple for its length and frequency, there is hardly any platforming, and most damning of all, the majority of your time playing will be spent in near silence. There is almost never any music playing outside of cutscenes, and the sound design is just as poor. The lack of music alone drove my friend insane, and he's told me that had we not agreed to play together, he would have never played it again.

We plan to complete Other M. Im at least hoping that I can find a few things to like about it, but it has made it very hard to do so.
