Chatoyance is the shimmery, cat’s eye effect seen when light reflects off a wood’s grain from different angles.

The 3D-like effect is most pronounced in darker tone woods such as Rosewood, Sapele and mahogany.

Hawaiian Koa wood can also have remarkable chatoyance, when figured.

I took a short video of one of our koa blanks from several angles. The light reflects stunningly against the quartersawn grain and all heartwood color. It really pops the grain.
