Astronauts leave as a engineer but return as humanitarian.

When I saw this video, my jaws literally dropped. Whenever I ask my friends if they feel this same way (as I do) when or after they ride an airplane, no one would ever understand me. It's just such a wonderful feeling to find someone who understands how you feel. I love getting this feeling/ this view about life and unity of earth. It's like I start seeing everything in a bigger picture. Like I lose social norms, problems that seemed so big but are actually something not to worry about... I start to feel that I don't live in like a repeated cycle. Like I have no schedule... And when I see other people, it's like I start seeing their heads in a box or something.. Like their minds are trapped in a small box, and they live life like repeatedly, , , and worrying about small things.

The feeling, I can't really explain. These astronauts probably felt this "effect" extremely greater than I did, since they're seeing the Earth fully; while I just see the Earth's horizon from the sky (which gives me this feeling or new perspective). And that's something that I envy about them. I lose this kind of perspective moments (like days) after I ride the airplane. But I try to sort of revive the feeling/perspective, because it's such a beautiful way to see Earth. Sometimes when I'm outside I would find myself looking at the sky, just wishing I could travel again so I could be on my next plane ride. Because this feeling, or what they called the "overview effect", is fading from me as much as I try to keep it alive.

When I try to revive this feeling, I just look to the sky (like the moon or the sun), and remind myself that I am seeing the same sun/moon that other people are seeing from the other side of the earth. We are all connected. We are all living in one planet. We may seem far from each other, but we are actually very close (especially compared to the size of the whole universe!). I can't wait for my next plane ride.

I'd like to go to outer space one day.

Still one of my favorite videos on YouTube. The commentary, the optics, the music... I come back to this often to try and reignite the spark of the Overview Effect. It's so easy for us to go into autopilot mode and lose track of the big picture so quickly.

That was beautiful.
Earth is just so ridiculously beautiful. Every moment of every day this planet and this universe bear witness to incomprehensible amounts of beauty. I love this planet so much. I love the universe so much.

I've been chasing the overview effect all my life. We are one species with one destiny. We need to set aside differences for a common goal: sustainable prosperity. Ignore anyone who thinks otherwise, shun every religion that doesn't embrace others or the non-religious, every politician who who won't ignore the 'party', the expenses or the backhanders to do what's right, to hell with every Soldier A, every Taliban and everybody who thinks that shoes, handbags or the latest shiny Jeremy Clarkson car advert will answer all your prayers. Stand up, grow up, and kick my arse too, if I forget the overview.

Looking at the earth from that perspective, you can't help but feel proud, feeling of belonging and a over whelming feeling of home. You can't help but get lost in it, you forget all the troubles and think of the wonders of life and how lucky you are to have a home, and to be alive

Wouldn't it be wonderful it NASA put a pair of movable cameras up there and let people use something like Oculus Rift to remotely gaze around.

FYI: Edgar Mitchell describes his search for a name to accurately describe what it felt like to see the earth from space: ‘savikalpa samadhi’ ~ means that you see things as you see them with your eyes, but you experience them emotionally and viscerally, as with ecstasy, and a sense of total unity and oneness.

This is beautiful. I wish that I could firsthand have this sense of awe and wonderment. To see what they have seen. I find it hard to escape the day to day struggles that separate us all as a species. When I take the time to meditate on it. I can feel the oneness, be aware of it. But how long will it be before everyone LIVES this feeling, not just being aware of it?

Amazing film, your perspective changes when you look to the stars - small, insignificant things don't matter anymore

Please share this far and wide..  I am so grateful for this production.  The overview effect has been a core guiding effect for me since I first saw that image of the Earth from Space and bought it as a poster from The Whole Earth Catalog.  I believe it is revolutionary.  I hope this continues to inform and influence us.
