Does having a beard make you a man? No it doesn't.

The new thing these days is if you grow your beard out, then you're more of a man. On instagram and twitter, #beardgang is the popular thing these days.

The reality is, it's more of a hipster thing to do.

We've embraced that culture to say that growing your beard out makes you a man. Subhan Allah, a lot of Muslims have grown their beards out because it's now in fashion.

Is there anything wrong with that?

It depends. As long as you have the correct intention, there's nothing wrong with it. So, I would say that growing your beard out makes you a man if you do it for the right reasons.

We as Muslims grow our beards out, not because it's in style, not because it's current fashion, not because some celebrities are doing it, not because we saw it on the cover of GQ Magazine.

We do it because it's a commandment from the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wasallam (may peace and blessings be upon him), it's the sunnah (the practice and way of) the Prophet Muhammad sal Allahu alayhi wasallam.

And, it's the sunnah of the prophets who came before as well.

By doing so, we make sure that when we grow our beards out we're rewarded for that action. We're not doing it because it's the hipster thing to do, nor so we can get on Instagram and post a picture with hashtag beardgang.

We're doing it in obedience of Allah, the only one worthy of worship, the most high.

Look, I'm not saying that if you've grown your beard out for the wrong reasons that you should go shave your beard. What I'm saying is that it's time to change and renew our intention.

"I'm growing my beard out of obedience to Allah, the only one worthy of worship, the most high."

If tomorrow beards went out of fashion and the hipster thing to do was to have a clean shaven face like a baby's butt, if that would happen, we wouldn't change. We'd still grow out our beards.

We would still be special.

And, we would still be MEN, because we have implemented the way of the Prophet Muhammad, may peace and blessings be upon him, and the way of the prophets who came before.

And, with that we can make sure that we're rewarded for growing out our beards. It's not just a fashion or style thing.

Alhumdulillah (all praise and all expressions of gratitute are for Allah), that is the beauty of Islam and the way of the Prophet Muhammad, may peace and blessings be upon him.

Until next time!

Asalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu
May peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you.

For other cultures, growing your beard out may also has historical or even old religious meaning. For instance, I sport a rather large beard, (for the most part because i want to, and nobody tells me how my face must look, ) but also in remembrance of my ancesters the vikings. This can both be seen as a historical purpose, and also religious if one wishes so. Depends on the eyes that see...

Ya Ustadh, I'm confused about Beard length. There's so many variant opinions I've come across, which do I follow?

I wonder about the permissibility (or "halalness") of growing a beard through the use of minoxidil. I ask this because the vast majority of Chinese Muslims like myself, cannot grow a beard. I struggle with whether to use minoxidil to grow a beard, because while it would help me fulfill the sunnah of growing a beard, I have to admit that it is a cosmetic endeavour that has no medical justification or necessity, for being beardless is not a disorder requiring medical intervention. Will be most grateful if you could advise. Thank you. Al from Singapore.

Assalamu aleykum saad tasleem,

What about those men who can barely grow a beard? If it isn't a beard but more a "fuzz"? Should they shave those hairs to look clean or should they keep them even if they can't naturally grow a full beard ?

Barakallahu feek and may Allah reward you!

Mashalllah good video but many muslims don't know that it is fard to grow a beard
It is stated in the quran
 أَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَ
Obey allah and his rasool

Therefore it is mandatory for us to follow the hadith (traditions of Rasool) and acording to theses hadith

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Trim the moustaches and let the beard grow."

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) commanded to clip the moustaches and grow the beard long.

That the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ordered trimming the mustache and leaving the beard to grow.

Ibn `Umar said, The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'Do the opposite of what the pagans do. Keep the beards and cut the moustaches short.' Whenever Ibn `Umar performed the Hajj or `Umra, he used to hold his beard with his hand and cut whatever moustaches. Ibn `Umar used to cut his moustache so short that the whiteness of his skin (above the upper lip) was visible, and he used to cut (the hair) between his moustaches and his beard.(Source sunnah.com)
