Tracking WallStreetBets Stocks with Python, Reddit API, and SQL

Note: while I hope this is obvious, you shouldn't blindly follow or make decisions based on data from an online community. I have owned these silver coins for years. /r/wallstreetbets and other communities have a ton of bot accounts, and there will only be more as this community has become larger and more mainstream. Large financial institutions own Silver, and there will be many attempts to manipulate the behavior of these communities over time. Same way that Yahoo Finance message boards and other communities got flooded with posts to pump and dump stocks or scare people to sell.

As an experienced data scientist/engineer, I started watching this with some skepticism and now I'm a subscriber. I just wish some of the analysts in my team were as talented.

Great walkthrough! Just started writing Python. I added a quick check on the cashtag tokens to weed out the actual money tokens like $400. Something like this:
for cashtag in cashtags:
if not utils.hasNumbers(cashtag):
if cashtag in stocks:

Coming from a Python noob this is one of the better tutorials for anything stock and Python related. Going to revisit this.

Hi, I’m a new programmer (going through coursera stuff and learning how to apply it to trading) and this channel is an absolute God send! Your bringing so much value, thank you for taking the time to make all these videos, I’m overwhelmed with the information right now but amazed by what I’m learning! Thank you!!!

Yooo larry!! my guy!

I've been following your postgres/docker tutorials and you adding so much value to those videos, I appreciate it man!!
I was able to populate the etfdb and mention tables, the only thing I've noticed different about your data right now is that you have the username when doing the "wallstreebets" portion, did you by any chance added that extra column on your mention table?

Brilliant! I love it and thank you for posting this. I had to buy one share and be part of history. Figure if it's still around I will give it to my kids. Interesting times for sure.

We could do a scan looking for spikes in activity on reddit for a stock that matches a spike the following day in our historical data. That way in future we could look for the same increases in activity on subreddits that had a high probability of seeing spikes the following day at market open and ensure our position is in

This is a great run though using Python! I'm Java guy by trade (15+ years), but have been wanting to be challenged with new languages. This is great and takes no time at all to get actual results... whereas with Java, there is a lot of "setup" to do. Anyway, I am having a bit of trouble getting Friday's data from this code. I can get 3/4/2021 but nothing after that. This being said, great work on the video!

I was thinking about building something like this myself this weekend, but you're so awesome you actually did it! Thanks for the great content
