Toward a new understanding of mental illness - Thomas Insel

Today, thanks to better early detection, there are 63% fewer deaths from heart disease than there were just a few decades ago. Thomas Insel, Director of the National Institute of Mental Health, wonders: Could we do the same for depression and schizophrenia? The first step in this new avenue of research, he says, is a crucial reframing. (Filmed at TEDxCaltech.)

You have the right idea. It is the thought patterns that have to be addressed or the beliefs themselves.

Alright, never mind the witty comment. It is great that we can detect diseases in earlier stages. I for one can only applaud and hope this tendency continues.

This is a great talk, but I watched it a few months ago on the main TED channel.

That is all fine and good and I am sure they would be left alone if they did not become a danger to themselves or other people.
Even "harmless" mental illness is such that the person themselves cannot cope with what the rest of us deal with on a daily basis so people that are mentally ill often turn themselves in or they shut themselves out of living a normal life because everything is a problem to them.
You cannot really understand it unless it happens to you or you are close to someone ill.

infact they are. physics define movement and chemistry ARE what working mechanisms are made. And with the recent tecnologies in biology, humans are able to create living tissues from molecular structures

Are you sure those scans don't show the effect of the medication?

The evidence is of Creation by a Maker, if you want to prove objects made you, that is your positive assertion that you have to prove before you can say they did.

I was listening to a song someone wrote in a foreign language and it said something to the effect that so many brilliant people killed themselves and then it goes on to say, with a double negative ...and I am not no good! ...meaning I am not doing (no) good (myself).
That was when I burst out laughing and then the song when on to laugh irrationally!
The truth is that we are fragile people hanging by a thread of truth and we need to believe all truth in order to make that thread a strong rope!

And don't even get me started on the lack of efficacy of the medications that cost hundreds of dollars per month for 10% improvement or make you feel even worse or destroy major organs like lithium can do to kidneys.

The Maker of all matter is obviously not made of the matter that he made to work inside of us when it is directed.

...and there are a lot of brain abnormalities/disorders, that often make people very exceptional, that are not the same thing as mental illness.

Schizophrenia can be very dangerous because, if the person has a mind to do something, they are capable of doing just about anything they have a mind to do but generally and fortunately, they usually don't have a mind to do harmful things.
Just be advised that, if they are talking about something, they are thinking about it and they are very capable of doing it. That is just an FYI.

It is not about religion, it is about the truth that objects can't make you because they don't know how.

We see, all the time, people that seem to have everything going for them and something is still not right. They still think something that is not true.
In the song below, they actually say that if anyone is thinking thoughts of suicide, to "nip it in the bud".

This is a topic regarding science, not archaic social controls.

That awkward moment when both top comments are by the same person...

Why do we need to fix them. Why not just work out the problem and see what it is they do wrong and work out how it can be useful, and then they don't feel that they are broken. I think you should cross out the word disorder, and replace it brain differences. And then when you look at all brains are different and that a disorder is just something we see as "too different" to what we like. And that to me is discrimination! Figure out how to get these peoples abilities and find a purpose for them.

You can only go by the information that there is.
You made the faulty assumption that your Maker was made.
You are the observable evidence of what is not made of matter.

And who made the super intelligent maker?
