However, I look mixed, so instead of pronouncing it the way it's spelled (which is correct) they assume it's foreign and butcher the hell out of it, followed by "Where is it from?". They always look so surprised and apologetic when I tell them. Bonus: it's not even an uncommon name in my region.

I have a "White" name (Italian) and this still happens. It's two syllables and even when I pronounce it in front of them (MAH-so) they still say "MAY-so".
