Thanks to my Scottish accent, I always add "like the car" with a steering wheel motion when introducing myself. So I know how you feel SewageWince

I can only imagine how many times he had to deal with this. But this video did unironically keep his name and it's pronunciation in my head pretty well

I'm white, but my last name is polish. At my graduation, they had us spell our names out phonetically. They still somehow didn't say it right.

I knew a guy named Sung-won. Got tired of going through this every time he got a new job and tried going by "Simon" for a bit

As an Asian, I understand this pain, but my name is Kevin so I only have half of this pain.

I'm Dutch, my last name is Dutch. However, I look mixed, so instead of pronouncing it the way it's spelled (which is correct) they assume it's foreign and butcher the hell out of it, followed by "Where is it from?". They always look so surprised and apologetic when I tell them. Bonus: it's not even an uncommon name in my region.

They will go thru every other vowel and annunciation in *every other language* before even *getting close* to the correct ones

I feel like 'Aliyah' isn't necessarily a non-white name, but I still very much relate.

I've been called "A-Lay-Ah, " "A-Lie-Yuh" and ELIJAH?

A distant relative of mine married into a Dutch family whose last name is Naaktgeboren. Not only can nobody spell or pronounce the name. A lot of people ask what it means and she has to embarrassingly say it means born naked.

I have legitimately had people call me antman not as a nickname they legitimately thought my name was antman

I feel great sympathy for anyone who has to deal with this regardless of what country they live in

I have a "White" name (Italian) and this still happens. It's two syllables and even when I pronounce it in front of them (MAH-so) they still say "MAY-so".

I have a slightly Americanized polish last name. I have literally argued with teachers about the pronunciation of my last name.
