Thank you Colin .Yes an eye opener . I believe this answers the reason while some people’s photos I see are so sharp to view .Whilst some I have posted are quite in my mind really poor . Yet viewing on my pc are so very sharp and worth sharing. Usually I just remove these and have been scratching my head as to the cause ?

Colin, Love it - that out take about the file data takes me back to my hard drive storage and RAID array days. How a hard drive doesn't even really read all the bits but just grabs what it can and using algorithms correctly calculates what data was/is actually there. If you think about the actually surface area of the data the spin speed and speed of read/write head movement it's like trying to read a page of a magazine on the ground whilst flying over it just above ground level flying at the speed of sound! Then just add RAID to that! I was always amazed any of it even worked, let alone at the speed it does. Do not move running hard drives folks! As for subjects for future, colour gamut and what is best for what purpose screens /printing. Calibration?

Thank you so much for the concise, clear explanation of an important topic, Colin. You asked what more we would to hear in this Back-to-Basics series: I would like to learn more about the other output file types that Ps offers — Cineon? Dicom? IFF Format? JPEG 2000? JPEG Stereo? Thanks, again for sharing your knowledge with us!

Thanks for an informative and useful session. I had a heck of a time the other day when I was trying to flip a layer horizontally. Finally figured it out but only after a bunch of head scratching/banging. Thought I was missing a layers menu option but apparently not. Another one was trying to create a vignette effect which again I figured out. Both of these actions are straight forward in other photo editing programs. Perhaps there are other things in Photoshop that require more effort than in less powerful solutions. Thanks.

Thanks for the simple and clear explanation! I really appreciate it. I'd love to see something basic for smart objects and something basic for masks. Thanks again!!!

I agree with the hard "G" for GIF. Jiff is a peanut butter.

Thanks Colin - a great refresher for me with some added clarity from what I knew. I would like to see a basic tutorial on obtaining an ICC Color profile file from an online or other "everyday snapshot printer" (e.g. Costco) and exactly how to install it in Photoshop and Lightroom and how to use it to ensure accurate colors and soft printing and then resetting LR & PS back to normal / default settings for my next project (I'm always reluctant to make significant (for me) changes to PS & LR for fear I can't undo what I've done). I really appreciate your clear, and understandable presentation style - thanks a million!

Hi Colin - great explanation of the file types!
Question. Any difference in exporting in PNG-24 vs. TIFF with transparent background for projects that I’m using in a video. Typically it’s Logos, Text or cutouts of guitars I’ve photographed. I use them to import into FinalCut to overlay as a graphic. Thanks -Anthony

Another very useful video. Thanks! Now, can you explain animation and time lines in PS, please?

Many thanks - I did not realise that I should save file as a TIFF instead of PSD when sending to a print outlet! Regarding further Basic Tutorials, one on “Actions” would be very welcome.

Although I more or less knew this stuff the video has encouraged me to incorporate the principles into my work flow. Thanks

Thanks Colin, v helpful. I wondered what use case is best for .SVG and what its features are? (I think perhaps it's only appropriate for illustration type vector images from Sketch or AI, but not quite sure.)
