This video essay sums up my thoughts on Rengoku, who I think was the standout character in the Demon Slayer movie. I really like the way that his character was written, and in this video I explain why.

I guess this is how you show ur love to Rengoku by roasting her like a classic Tsundere.

Rengoku didn’t have much screen time and was killed off so early, yet he strangely feels like a character that you have known for a long time. His death hit me like the deaths of characters who I grew up with.

Rengoku's biggest W was making us fall in love with him in such little time...

Rengoku won. Hear me out. Rengoku, chose to defend everyone. He sacrificed himself, and I quote, to "not let anyone else die". He won the battle because he did exactly what he set out to do

Everyone is living their best life in their dreams, while rengoku is dreaming about his real life with zero changes. Even his mom is still dead in his dream. Showing us that he is happy about his life, that he is grateful for everything he has right now and that he moved on from his past hardships. Its genius writing and great character builing. He is my favorite character in all anime to this date and your video shows many reasons why.

I love Rengoku, but this was the perfect way to introduce an Upper Moon. If Akaza showed up and lost to Rengoku it would've been very underwhelming and the Upper Moons are supposed to be super strong where not even Pillars could beat them, living for centuries etc. It was the perfect way to demonstrate an Upper Moons power and was perfectly excuted in my opinion.

I feel like the reason everyone fell in love with Rengoku the way we did is because of, like you stated, his steeled ambition. Like despite all the crap the man faced, it never wavered him, even up until his last moments. Rengoku was truly an amazingly written and presented character. And that’s admirable, at least it is in my book.

Rengoku’s death felt like something completely unexpected and unbelievable, yet realistic. Like it shouldn’t have happened at all. Everything is going normal, then out of nowhere akaza appears, then he kills rengoku shortly after, felt like it all happened too fast that it felt out of place.

You are wrong. Rengoku didn't lose. He said : " I'm not gonna let any of these people die."

And he kept his promise.

its somehow sad how some people consider only Rengoku's defeat and disregarded the fact that the Mugen train, the train he protected, had all its passengers only obtain minor injuries and that none of them died. To me, that makes him the Anime's Greatest Winner

"As a Hashira, of course I will shield my juniors!"

I was already tearing up but man, that line made me bawl my eyes out.

The ending with akaza was also a massive W because Rengoku straight up said “Nobody else will die here” and he delivered. Notice how he said “nobody else” and never once said he could beat akaza either. I’m guessing Rengoku knew of akaza well since well akaza kills hashira like snacks and his family lineage is all hashira, so when akaza showed up Rengoku most likely knew upper moon 3 was far beyond him and that his life was over. But what did my man do? He stood strong as fuck and had balls of titanium. He fought even knowing this was death’s door, and he did it because he cares about others and wants others to succeed. He may have failed in many of his goals, such as beating muzan and gaining his father’s respect but he did not fail his ultimate goal: Protect others and leave the world a better place, the same goal his mother inspired him to achieve. The same goal that was present in his last moments. He achieved it and also inspired tanjiro, inosuke, and zenitsu. Rengoku may not have done everything he wanted, but he did what was most important to him. He died fighting as a man of conviction and an inspiration.

Just like real life, you may not be able to accomplish every dream you have no matter how hard you work but usually in life you can still accomplish that one small thing that’s usually the truly important thing. Whether it be finding job stability, having fun, finding love, or just being there for your loved ones.

Rengoku is a pure W in every sense of the word, what would a true W be without some L’s along the way?

I’ll forever love Rengoku. The guy is a G. This man literally held a demon hostage with his living flesh and organs. Akaza literally punched through his solar plexus. (Aka his lungs.) And what do you need your lungs for? Total concentration breathing technique. Without total concentration he wasn’t be able to use any breathing forms, nor no longer had the ability to have the strength of a demon anymore. Yet he still was strong enough to stop akaza’s punches and almost decapitated him.

rengoku also turned his death into a dub by leaving his will to Tanjiro and having him deliver a final message to the rengoku house. man stopped his little brother from throwing himself into the demon slayer corps fodder and showed his father forgivness making him literally stop drinking himself to death and be a better person from beyond the grave. Motivated the whole Hashira into working harder too, especially Tengen.

The fact Rengoku was getting washed and still came this 🤏 to putting Akaza on a shirt is nutty. Bro could have been a protagonist himself.

He is literally the epitome of masculinity, and virtue. This movie made me cry, and decide that I needed to be a better man. A virtuous, and more masculine man. Kyojuro Rengoku is what every man should strive to be. Strong, brave, courageous, faithful, loving, kind, patient, and persevering.

What's also amazing in Rengoku's dream is his definition of good, since Enmu's spell was for the infected to have a good dream. Dude literally sees all the good in shitty situations.

Regoku: *Gets donuted.*
Also Regoku: *Clenches his abs so tight around the arm through his gut the demon has to rip it off to escape while still trying to decapitate said demon.*
