LFC#180 - macOS Mojave Library Permissions Issues

Here's a quick software video about dealing with broken permissions in 10.14, which may prevent user apps like Photos, iTunes, Mail, Calendar etc from opening their libraries.
Examples include photos saying "The Library Could Not Be Opened", "macOS needs to repair your Library to run applications" and so on. This is a little trickier to repair now due to System Integrity Protection locking certain files. The procedure is to drop into recovery mode and bash "csrutil disable" into terminal. Then boot normally, take ownership of the whole user library folder, and then repeat step 1 with "csrutil enable".

Many thanks for this very helpful video. This solved the problem I was having with a MacBook that had had the OS reinstalled and the files restored from an external backup. The fix took just a few minutes and saved me a lot of time and aggravation.

Well, what a gem this video is. Had a Mac / Mojave machine that was bound to MS Active Directory. MS is alienating the Mac from AD. Unbound the Mac the make the user local again. Didn't realize how easy it was to reclaim the user home folder. All good, except Safari/Mail/Reminders/etc etc would all fail to run; complaining about having to fix the user's Library folder - and failing to do so. I have spent 2wks trying everything under the sun. Search after search, try after try, I never found a solution OR anything/anyone mentioning any "System Integrity Protection" [feature]. Geeesh.

Had tried the chown run, but to no avail. So, after stumbling into this vid, the BIG LIGHT came ON. Unbelievable. Would never have figured this out.

In my case, restored the user folder from Time Machine. Reclaimed the home folder in System Preferences / Users. Made the user an admin. Reboot. Cmd-r / Utilities / Terminal to shut OFF the !@#$% System Integrity Protection "FEATURE". Reboot. Log'd in as the admin capable user. Terminal. Ran the chown command string as shown. And, Whalla. Good To Go. All apps now launch, run, complete with previous data. Amazing. --Come to S-FL, look me up, and get a free lunch (somehow) that's on me. Thank you!!!

Curious, btw. Launching the MacOS flash drive ... How did you get it to go to the recovery mode vs just running the installer? Guessing "Option" to see the bootable drives, select, and Cmd-r ?
Did not realize there is a recovery partition created on bootable usb thumbdrives when creating an installer USB drive. Is that correct? Thx.

got this issue with garageband downloaded the last version checked my library checked my disk permissios with disk utility nothing seemed to work so I will try terminal and see if it works thanks for the video tutorial

The problem I had was solved only by executing the command in the main system, despite skipping the pass of booting the system from usb. My problem was that all the files were left as "root" user

I have tried( setfile -d MM/DD/YYY /folderlocation) nothing. I have tried (touch -t CCYYMMDDHHMM /folderlocation) nothing. I have tried (sudo chown -Rv /folderlocation) nothing. I have tried ( sudo chmod 777 /folderlocation) nothing. I have tried (chflags nohidden ~/Library/) nothing. I am out of ideas... any suggestions? oh the subfolders where changed from the first option but not the parent.
Update: I can access the subfolders read and write but the Library folder still greyed out. a little history I did a mac to mac transfer originally.

Do you have an advice for becoming the owner of the previous home folder. Basically, I wanted to change the account name and the user name. After doing so, the prior home folder was locked. The applications were ported to the new account but no the music or the photos. I did the above (using the get info box and not the terminal) in an attempt to make myself the owner of the old home folder but without success. Can the above trick be used for an old home folder?

Could you simply find the Library folder, click on it once to select it then do "Get info" (Command I) to open the get info screen then modify the permissions after unlocking the lock with your password ? Never tried it but maybe the correction can be made there if you don't have an external booting source.

i have a question, maybe u can help me. first of all, my English not the best m8. But itry my best. I have Mojave installd. all works fine. But when i change my Desktop Background on my 2 Displays . it works fine, but when i restart my MAc mini or shutdown and Reboot, my Desktop wallpaper i set is gone. so it not safe the last Wallpaper i change. u have a n idea.why it not safe my settings on desktop wallpaper change ? it change but it wil not remember it when i restart i got a Wallpaper that i set maybe a year ago. maybe u can help me out .
