Virginity is kind of the metaphor for the redemptive powers of love...I bet your English teacher had something to say about that kind of symbolism. There are multiple biblical and religious references throughout all the books, as well as the movies. But people won't perceive that the books (and to a lesser extent, the movies) are a masterpiece for a long time, in fact, wait for it, for fifty years.
