Philippine Navy BRP Antonio Luna - Jose Rizal-class frigate

Naval News takes you aboard BRP Antonio Luna (FF-151), one of the latest and most modern surface combatant in the Philippine Navy's fleet.

We interview exclusively the duty officer, CAPT. Clyde Domingo, on the Jose Rizal-class of frigates. The missions, weapons and systems aboard.

The Jose Rizal-class frigates for the Philippines are based on an HHI design, which is a smaller version of the Incheon frigates (FFX-I) of the ROK Navy. The Philippine frigates have a standard displacement of about 2,600 tons and a length of 107 meters. The diesel main power plant under the CODAD scheme should provide a full speed of 25 knots, a cruising range of 4500 nautical miles at a speed of 15 knots.

The Philippine frigates have four anti-ship missile launchers (for South Korean SSM-700K Haeseong / C-Star by LIG Nex1), two SIMBAD-RC short range SAM system by MBDA, a 76-mm main gun, one Aselsan SMASH 30mm secondary gun, two 324-mm three-tube torpedo launchers (for K745 Chung Sang Eo / Blue Shark torpedoes by LIG Nex1). They are fitted for but not with an 8x cell VLS for surface to air missiles. The ship has an helicopter deck and hangar to accommodate a Leonardo AW159 Lynx Wildcat helicopter. Most of the sensor and electronic suites are provided by Thales.

Cute little warship more Corvette than frigate suited for the inter-coastals of the Philippine archipelago and counter insurgency operations. lol I like it!

They Philippine Navy leadership needs to complete the vertical launch system with corresponding missiles and install a close in weapon system at the back of these frigates to make them really capable.

In connection with these the upcoming 6 OPV being built in South Korea should also have Surface to Air Missile and Anti-Ship Missile installed to make them really capable.

There is no point having warships with incomplete weaponry.

This ship will be fully equipped soon and it is not a display but has capability to do his mission within 200 nautical missiles with the economic Zone. I heard that the anti-ships missiles are equipped and only 3 countries have this and those are Korea, Columbia and the Philippines has the Modern Anti ship missiles and i heard that they will receive soon the Bramos Cruise missiles to protect those ships from land to launch the bramos as the ship do the navigation in sea to be thier guide to hit the target i guess. Wish that it has the quadruple instead of twin anti-ship missile launchers, that it has the VLS installed instead of SHORAD, and has the CIWS instead of RCWS. Not to mention the TASS.
