Team GB's Mo Farah adds the 5000m gold medal to his 10,000m gold in the Olympic Stadium at the London 2012 Olympic Games (11 August).

Ethiopia's Dejen Gebremeskel won the silver medal in the event with Kenya's Thomas Pkemei Longosiwa taking bronze.

Since 1896, athletics has been on the programme of each edition of the Games of the Olympiad. Its presence on the Games programme has allowed its popularity to increase across the world. This popularity was also strengthened by the creation of the IAAF in 1912. Women's events appeared for the first time at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, while the men's programme was standardised as of the 1932 Games in Los Angeles. Although at the beginning women were authorised to participate in only some events, today their programme is almost identical to that of the men.

I was in the stadium with my late father watching this. We had seats up in the second tier looking down on the 100 m start line. The atmosphere was electric. RIP Dad. He always loved the 5000 and 10000 m events.

The crowd noise, and the way Mo reacted to the challengers, was sensational. I have enjoyed this for 8 years already. I hope to enjoy it for another 20 years.

I can’t express how difficult it is to run at this pace, then finish the last lap like that. Even after years of training, it’s unbelievably hard to do. Mo is truly incredible, so finely tuned

They run a 52 second 400m after running 4600m?!?! These dudes are crazy

As a African myself its still always crazy to see how incredible African runners at long distance. Some of these runners come from rural parts of their countries where they don't have electricity and running water let alone expensive training facilities like some of these other athletes might have access to. Absolutely incredible.

Do you guys ever think it's funny that the people who come last are only about 8 seconds slower than mo farah haha and they are some of the best in the world and yet 8 seconds makes all that difference.

Just goes to show that long distance running is just as much of a mental game as it is a physical one, good job Mo!

Oh yes! Let's skip out the bit where Mo Farah actually gets to the front and instead let's put in the high jump.
Fab idea.

Commentator: "That was a slow lap, 71 seconds."

I wonder if non-runners understand what running just one 71 lap is like?

I might, with a good bit of training be able to go that fast, on a bicycle.

So let me get this straight, they run for 4, 600 meters and are still being able to run the last 400 meters that fast??? WHAT?

Mo Farrah is not only one of the best distance runners of all time in terms of his quickness, but his tactics too. Flawless.

My personal best for the 400m was 55 seconds and they ran faster than that after running 4600m. Insane how talented these men are.

I was there on the 200m line just 12 rows from track. The atmosphere was just electric I’ve never experienced an atmosphere like that utter magic
