Once on Jacksonville beach in Florida I got too close to a Portuguese Man-O-War because I was trying to figure out what the beautiful neon blue plastic looking thing was. My grandmother did exactly that, and she survived. Though she knew full well that she was picking up a cone snail, and made sure to grab away from the stinging end. She then went home and tossed that thing in an ant hill, and then picked up the shell a week later.
