Once extremely abundant throughout all tributaries to Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River, the American eel has seen a dramatic population decline. In 2006, the presence of eels in these waters decreased by almost 90 per cent.

The main threat facing eels in Ontario are hydropower dams, which block juveniles from migrating upstream, and whose turbines kill adults when they try to return to the sea to spawn at the end of their lives.

The Canadian Wildlife Federation is tracking and tagging American Eels in the Ottawa River in collaboration with the Fish Ecology and Conservation Physiology Lab at Carleton University, Energy Ottawa, the Algonquins of Ontario. Our long-term goal is to re-establish a safe migration route for American eels in collaboration with local communities and hydroelectric producers.
