Steve's 1975 Evinrude 40 HP Restore Part 7 - Water Pump Rebuild

We finally get to the long awaited water pump rebuild on the lower unit. I fabricated a jig for easily holding the lower unit at a comfortable working height. Also a sneak peak at removing the carb from this Evinrude outboard.

Ill have to go back on Monday and this time ill bring my housing and broken impeller. The many surprises of a 50 year old motor and many owners.

1. If the key way is stuck, could be just old grease holding on. I put grease on mine to hold it in place while I slid the impeller down over it. Or it could be bent, in which case try and remove it and get a replacement. 2. I ordered the water pump kit, Item#63 on the diagram, and it came with the 2 gaskets. But I have seen people also just use RTV Sealant in their place. 3. I also had moved the shifter rod, the main thing is to know what gear it's in before reassembling.

Hi Leo. Thanks for the great videos.3 questions if you don't mind. 1. My keyway is stuck, any suggestings, I don't want to damage it. 2. My existing waterpump doesn't have the gaskets, just a wear plate then the impeller in the pump housing. Marine Engine diagrams don't show the gaskets you used? 3. I am afraid I may have moved the shift rod in the lower unit while "testing" the propeller spin after I removed the lower unit and drained the oil, will I have probems reconnecting the shift rod?

3b. Spin the driveshaft clockwise, and see if prop spins. Click the shift rod til you find neutral, when you reattach the lower unit, make sure the shift handle is also in neutral.

Yes, the prop won't spin when on neutral. Don't worry to much about gear oil for little movements to find neutral :-)

Hi Chris, I wondered that too, but the answer is no, there is no thermostat on this model. If its over heating, likely water pump needs new impeller.

Thank you so much for the quick response ! Watching you work on your evinrude has given me confidece to to attempt mine ! To know that my lower unit is in neutral I assume that the prop shaft shouldn't spin while I spin the drive shaft clockwise correct? Also, I already drained the lower unit...perhaps I should fill partially when attempting to get it into neutral? I will let you know if I get it running.

Thanks. Took it apart today and the impeller was in several pieces. My local shop had one in stock... Purchased it, brought it home and it looks like I may have a different impeller housing. Looking at iboats.com I may have a 1970-73 impeller on my motor. The actual impeller is a lot thinner (in height, same diameter) and therefore doesn't fit in my housing.

Also...should the shift rod in the lower unit move easily? How far is it from reverse to neutral and neutral to forward? I assume no more than an inch either way right? Thanks again !

Hey Leo great work... I was wondering is there a thermostat on this motor? I'm trouble shooting an overheating issue and was going to look at the water pump today... Any other suggestions? Thanks a bunch

Hey Leo, thanks for the great video. I have a question about the key way. What is the orientation for it on the drive shaft? It appears to be a small half crescent shape with a small notch on one end. Can you explain what orientation it goes on the drive shaft? Thanks so much!

Ah yes, they can use 2 different types of housing and impeller. Old style is the skinny like you have. I used marine engine dot com for parts and diagrams, not sure if they ship to Canada tho, but their parts diagrams are very helpful.
