How to Use SADDLE SOAP on Boots | CLEANING Leather Boots

Here's how to use saddle soap to clean your leather boots.

To clean your boots with saddle soap, you'll need a few items:

You'll need saddle soap. In this video I'm using Kiwi, but my top pick for best saddle soap is Fiebings.

And a leather conditioner for when you're done. Here are two of my favorite inexpensive leather conditioners.

Brush off all dust and dirt from your boots with a rag. Fill the top of your saddle soap tin with warm water. Wet a dauber brush with the water and create suds in the saddle soap by working the dauber in a circular motion.

Brush your entire boot in a circular motion until the upper is entirely covered in suds. Wipe off excess soap with a microfiber towel. Let your boots dry and condition.

I like your down-to-earth, no frills sensible and useful advice. And *thank you* for not incorporating useless and annoying background music. You will go from strength to strength.

I’m glad you told me to take the lid off, once I did that, it was all downhill.

Good tutorial, the only bit of information I’d add is that you may need (and it’s okay to use) a brush to kick excessive dirt before you clean and condition your boots. I’m a commercial electrician in a very dirt happy area of the country, I have to use a fairly stiff brush to knock off the heavy dirt off my Red Wing Roughnecks

Thank you. Clean my boots a lot but you gave me some really good pointers in a simple way and you weren't annoying about it. Thank you for not adding stupid ass music or anything like that to your video. Truly appreciated!

Can you polish shoes a day after using leather conditioner? I assume you shouldn’t use conditioner after polishing but I could be wrong

How often do you recommend cleaning leather shoes/boots that get 1-2 wears a week? My understanding is that maybe 1-2 a year is enough, assuming your are doing regular conditioning. Is that right?

I live in west Texas, I leave my boots in the sun for 40 minutes- 1 Hour the longest. In the winter well ya over night inside. Also I use a soft toothbrush to get in those deep spots like the welts and the guest. Also I use a sponge the apply and conditioner as it spreads it nicely and it allows me once again to get in those tight spaces. Another thing I do is put a light coat of the conditioner on the inside and if the soul is a veg tan I apply there as well. Breaks in the boot nicely and keeps the inside from falling apart. Had a pair of RedWings Iron rangers since I was 18 now 44 and only had 3 re-soul. My Nicks since I was 20 and only 2 re-soul. Every time I get a complement on how the soul and inside has kept up. Just saying the inside needs love too just not as much. I do the inside about 3 times a year.

Any special recommendation or tips for the while sole on the moc toes? The same saddle soap is enough?

I got a question, although saddle soap mostly consists of water, why not using it without soaking the brush, so it gets dry faster?

Nice video. Very informative. But please help me; I can't get a shine on my leather work boots to save my soul. I'v tried everything known to man and experimented with every technique and medium for years, right out of the box boots and old boots. Is it me or is it the leather? It's almost as if the supple leather is too porous and the wax or polishing oils never completely dry. I generally wear Red Wings, Carolina's, and ThouroughGood's. When I was a kid in the 70's and 80's, they would always shine up to a mirror finish. Your help would be greatly appreciated

From own experience I can say that you don’t want to use these kind of products on the Red Wing copper rough and tough leather. You better use nothing but a bit of warm water to clean those boots. And if they become really dirty I use some dishwasher soap and brush to gently clean them and after that a very thin coat of Fiebing’s mink oil. Remove the excess oil quickly with a cloth and let the boots dry for at least 24 hours. So you keep the great looks of the rough and tough leather.
