I don't understand why we assume people from ancient times were stupid, backwards or barbaric they were just as smart as us. Yes, technology/modernisation has improved our quality of life but it hasn't made us significantly more intelligent as human beings the majority of us use this technology to watch funny cat videos and people falling over .

#5 entry really infuriates me. People can be so stupid sometimes. We can perhaps unlock mysteries about history and cultures of our ancestors hadn't these cretins destroyed that artifact. Same goes to the destruction of Palmyra Temple by the ISIS.

None of the ancient people were stupid...They were smart to keep knowledge available to only few, coz they knew if knowledge is shared with wrong person it might cause massive disaster on earth, as we see it today....

If I could travel back in time and get a guided tour of one of these mysterious places:

Tour Guide: "That's our giant pyramid over there where our priests sacrifice virgins. Next to that is our observatory... from which our scribes can accurately predict the movement of the stars and planets for thousands of years. Oh, and that huge dome rock structure across the path is where we house our spaceships."
Me: "You guys built this! Your technology is amazing! You're so much more advanced than we ever imagined. Do you still use chariots? What material do you guys use to build wheels?"
Tour Guide: "Hm? What's a wheel? Oh, the drums are beating. We best make our way to the great pyramid to witness the daily sacrifice. Oh, out of curiosity, are you a virgin?"

I just stumbled onto this video, and since I happen to be from Trivandrum, Kerala, where the Padmanabha Swami Temple is located, just thought I would quickly add my top-of-mind thoughts on this.

The temple and surroundings are no longer 'owned' by the Travancore Royal Family BTW. And, the hoard of treasure found in Vault A many years ago, is still being catalogued and evaluated; the excercise far from over. The B Vault has this door which has no visible means of opening. Old scrolls in the temple direly warns any attempt at opening this. Hints as to what is inside include a pre- historic relic or an idol, which is the crux of the world, and which would unleash annihilation if the vault is violated. The chamber is said to contain another farther door, which may be holding the ocean at bay; and which would flood the earth if opened. Other claims are that the inner portal is a portal to dimensions unknown and forbiden for man yet to attempt to visit. The treasure discovered in Vault A is estimated in excess of Indian Rupees 1.2 Lakh Crores (over US$ 1 Trillion). This is just the extrinsic value (the value of gold and other precious metals and the enormous sacks of cut and polished diamonds and rubies and other stuff. As said, the collection is only being catalogued, photographed and listed, lest they be plundered again (many unexplained entries by unauthorised personnel to this vault had been recorded over the century, and rumours also have that valuables were being removed regularly). The intrinsic value of the hoard must be flabbergasting (an acquaintance of mine is the Govt. appointed photographer attached to the Cataloguing team. He and the others on this job, are no experts in the historic significance of the hundreds of thousands of different kinds of coins with unknown symbols and solid gold statues ranging from small to unusually one-and- half times human sized ones (of unknown ethnic features- avian- human- alien hybrids; by him). The thousands of pieces of heavy jewellery, crowns, tiaras, necklaces etc are also of much intrinsic value. So are the loose precious stones. The point is, the extrinsic value must be staggering. And then, there is Vault B, which is said to contain a collection of strange artefacts which would reduce Vault A to insignificance. The main idol in this temple is Lord Vishnu. One can Google the strange features surrounding the statue itself and be truly awestruck by the mysteries. However, local and inside knowledge contain more disturbing and unexplained stuff, which have not yet made to the internet. For example, behind the statue appears a void, which is bottomless by the measuring attempts of many. Agreed, the attempts were all low tech - tying and lowering weights at the ends of ridiculously lengths of rope etc. However, none could touch bottom.

Maybe, if I'm encouraged, I can collect all the info I have on the temple, it's contents and especially Vault B and its implications, structure it properly on a post here. I'm sure those would be obscure materials, which could be validated locally, but which takes credence due to the centuries they have not been debunked. Some web links also could be included.

Anyways, I was fascinated to fine this temple from my town featuring the #1 spot on this list of 10 Most Mysterious Monuments.
