Sultanate of Maguindanao (c.1515 )Pre- Colonial Philippines

The Sultanate of Maguindanao is said by some sources to have been established at the end of the 12th cent-ury, by others in the early 1300s; the more likely date is c.1515. Ang mga naunang petsa ay malamang na tumutukoy sa pagtatatag ng isang pre-Muslim rajahdom sa pamamagitan ng pangalang iyon.
Ang isla ng Mindanao ay dating kilala bilang Gran Moluccas (o Great Moluccas) at ipinangalan ito sa mga Maguindanaon. Ang pangalan ay nangangahulugang 'mga tao sa mga kapatagan ng baha' at nagmula sa dalawang salita: maginged at danaw, which means people of the marsh.
Ang mga Maguindanaon ay isang matibay na angkan na naninirahan sa loob ng lupain na nagtatanim ng palay bilang kanilang pangunahing pananim na pagkain at nabubuhay sa pangingisda at paghahabi ng mga pinong banig at basket.
Sa loob ng maraming siglo, namuhay sila sa relatibong kapayapaan kasama ng ibang mga grupo ng tribo na naninirahan sa kabundukan ng Cotabato; ang mga bakuran na ito ay ginamit bilang isang lugar ng kanlungan at ngunit din bilang isang mapagkukunan ng pagkaalipin.
