We Finally Found the Best Way to Scout

After a long effort to test the scouting changes in FM22 from previous versions of Football Manager, we have a guide for scouting in this year’s FM. It is different than what I have recommended for years, but it immediately heated up my search for wonderkids on stream and I hope it is able to do the same for you. It has been far too long since we made a scouting tutorial based on this much evidence.

I am sad that region scouting is over. Football Manager decided to make it a bit more intensive but it seems that it has actually been rendered largely ineffective, to be replaced by more micromanagement in our pursuit of wonderkids. I hope region scouting is able to make a comeback in future FM’s but I know that Football Manager is not into too much plug-and-play stuff, so time to start making guides like this.

Much Love,
FM Senpai

5:48 This would've been very helpful in firing the scout that found Luke Edwards.

This is a really helpful video. I’m only part way through but the info is already extremely valuable. Add an additional level of complexity with hidden attributes and this method of scouting is so effective. Great video!

Great video this was really frustrating in FM22. I also find that effectiveness reduces over time, after about 6 months the reports dry up

Interesting adjustment of the strategy, thanks a lot for your simulations.
I made good experiences to youth national team as well, but also when scouting top clubs when the league is loaded went well.

Would be a nice little series to have a video per region where you distribute a ranking / grading of countries to focus on within that kind of region. Guessing many of us will still use that logic of regions even if we don’t actively select a region.

I’ve never done region scouting, nation is all I really do and it’s always been good. But the speaking the language bit I hadn’t really considered, but makes sense. I mainly struggle financially or tactically. Great content as usual!

Just an excellent video, produced well and the little Easter eggs (Damn you Luke Edwards) are great. Top marks all around.

This is amazing stuff! Just adjusted my scouting to 3-4 countries per scout as well: reports flying in! Really cool!

I love that there were 5 stars and that the player was in a Brazil jersey. Great details!

Glad to know I have been doing individual nation scouting for ages now. Think I told you how to do that on stream a good while back or here in the comments section. Would indeed be interested to know for sure if ongoing or until finished works better. My gut says until finished this FM

While i really like the change in that it just feels much more natural to have a scout in two maybe three or four countries and actually gives you some decisions to make rather than essentially scouting the whole world with 20 scouts. It's also such an SI thing to keep the options in that just straight up don't work anymore in a way that appears broken.

The U-20 World Cup/World Cup or International Competition scouting is my go to scouting lately, on my current save (albeit FM20) I bought 2 insanely good Chinese players for my team and now they're like 40m+ players.

I'm glad I found this out early in my save. Helped me a lot in building a strong squad fighting for UCL in Spain coming from LaLiga 2. But wasnt aware about the importance of the spoken language before the videos. Thanks a lot and keep the great work !

I quite like the SecondYellowCard approach. You need good scouts or step one won't work but when you have developed your back room staff (or if just playing with a team who already have good scouting resources) you just que up a load of team reports, generally the best to use are national under 21/19 sides but you can do clubs and senior national sides as well. Those reports get info on all the players who play for that side, not a lot but enough that it'll separate players who might be 5 star players from the many who definitely aren't, generally he finds as many as 4/5 per team but often it's 1/2 or even none. He takes those potentially good players and then just keep queing them for one week scouting reports, dropping off those who fall below the 4 star potential or if 21 or over the 4 3 star current ability mark. I'm not sure it's the most efficient but other than queing up all the reports if like him you do it in one big batch (between streams) it doesn't take much effort and means you have an awareness of a lot of players.
