this is generic advice for anyone joining. Be fit. Not soccer mom fit. Be combat fit. High strength high cardio. The more you strive to improve both aspects the better you will perform.

I enjoy my 6 years as a F-16 weapons troop. Got my bachelors degree plus more it was worth it at the end of the day. I had fun and enjoy my time serving the greatest Air Force in the world with honor.

The number one thing is to be loyal to the U.S. constitution, and not to any single person.

So the absolute worst thing about being in the reserve or guard is the way you get paid for your 2 week a year deployment. If this has been changed, then disregard. You get issued a government travel card that you apply for, so it's attached to your credit, that you use while on deployments. When the bill comes, you pay it, and you will get reinburt when your orders have been submitted, but if something goes wrong with your orders and they don't approved then you don't get reinburt. Then there's the way you get paid for the deployment. You get paid when your orders get approved. So when I was in the orders usually got approved 2 to 4 weeks after the deployment. So, leaving your family and then not getting paid for 2 weeks of work is a bad thing when you have a mortgage. Hopefully, all this has changed, but efficiency isn't the government's strong suite

I went into USAF basic in '75. In the months beforehand, I ran and weight trained. When I got to Lackland, the PT there was not as hard as the workouts I had at home, so I was able to focus on the mental portion of the training, not being worried about the physical. Being fit also helped in my career field, as more than a few times I needed to muscle heavy equipment.

I like this video .
There isn’t enough time to tell you everything about the guard . So your getting just small piece of the pie .
In the national guard, you are BOTH citizen, and soldier .
Ya, it kinda screws with your head . But you serve your country for a weakened every month, and for two weeks for one month .
To me, that’s a great deal for society at large and the governor of your state .
What about your employer ?
They must let you go . Besides who works on the weekends ?
But for the month you have to serve, your employer can not refuse you . He needs to realize that he’s in business because of you !

Here is a trick if you are single. Try to coincide your two weeks vacation from work with a guard TDY to some place interesting like maybe Europe. Then you get to double dip on pay plus see the world on their nickel. Sweet deal.

Look all of the career choices. Some choices will lock you into specific locations. Such as B52s and missiles. I took a desk job and after 4 years was discharged. Finished up my 4 year program to get my college degree. Eventually got my house and house loan on Uncle Sam. Back to USAF career choices, ask vets for their opinions. View the military as either a stepping stone or a career. It is doable.

Running with a sweat shirt on is dumb advice. You just lose water weight and become dehydrated. My son ran for Baylor University and this is not how It’s done.
