Partially false. Train companies are not responsible for infrastructure. Network Rail is. The only TOC in the UK with responsibility for infrastructure is Translink.. and they get by just fine charging considerably less than the average British ticket. It’s just price gouging. There is no doubt about it and no point hiding it as ‘just making money’.

The standard ticket you actually pay for combines a fee between Network Rail, and any other operators on the route (unless you get a example of say a TPE only railcard which is slightly cheaper)

Higher demand would lead to smaller fares as money would be more frequent and therefore lead to higher profit margins, not the complete opposite

Reversing privatisation is unlikely to solve the problem. A company still requires executives public or private, and there’s nothing stopping them getting greedy - Irish Rail is a perfect example of a publicised gouging mess

And with all that being said, I will always remember how unlimited travel on the Manchester Metrolink network is cheaper than a off peak return you can only use twice

The first paragraph on Wikipedia for privatisation is more informative than this video.

"train companies act like private businesses and charge whatever they want" - that's exactly the point... they don't act, they ARE, and so they do...

Its just a matter of gov: in Germany it's very cheap because the gov subsidizes it. In the UK, its not

Public transport turns to shit once you expect it to make money. Its a service to the public not a business.

The train companies here in the U.K. are owned by foreign companies. You’ll find rail fairs are far cheaper in Europe as by charging us extortionate amounts of money for tickets these companies can then charge far less in Europe. In short our high fairs subsidise low fairs in Europe.

The UK railway system isn't one of the oldest, IT IS the oldest, Stockton-Darlington 1825...

Train companies just operate services. They are not responsible for the infrastructure. That's what Network Rail does.

“Train companies act like private businesses”

No, they are private businesses, and the fact that they’re private is the sole reason for the high prices and poor service.

Germany and Belgium’s rail infrastructure is just as old as Britain’s, but they don’t have a privately owned rail system, so they don’t have these issues like we do. Blame Thatcher, not infrastructural age!

Rail companies dont upgrade tracks. We the tax payer do. They are a private enterprise and can do what they want and charge what they wan while we the tax payer pay for the tracks their trains sit on while they make massive profit. Simples!

It’s cheaper for me to fly out to Greece right now than it is to book a ticket from London Euston to Birmingham New Street 🤷🏼‍♂️

There's one level you've missed out, the rolling stock leasing firms. They charge the TOC's sky high fees for engines and carriages and add zero value to the service, just another set of snouts in the trough.

High density of people has nothing to do with high prices, many other countries have far higher populations with a far better and cheaper rail service. If the Government truly wants people to transition from private cars to public transport, trains need to be far cheaper. Everyone drives because it is far cheaper and quicker.
