Powaqqatsi: Ambient Reimagining with Sea Oleena

Experience Godfrey Reggio's visionary film Powaqqatsi in a new light. This video pairs the film's stunning visuals with the ambient soundscapes of Sea Oleena's Southbound.

Powaqqatsi (1988) explores the impact of industrialization on cultures worldwide, using powerful imagery and a minimalist score. Sea Oleena's music adds a new dimension, creating a thought-provoking soundscape.

Sea Oleena’s music, known for its introspective and dreamy qualities, resonates with themes of emotion and atmosphere, which can complement the contemplative and visual nature of films like Powaqqatsi. Both artistic expressions offer unique perspectives on human existence and our relationship with the world around us.

Sea Oleena is the project of Canadian musician Charlotte Oleena (Charlotte Loseth). Based out of Montreal, her music hovers between ambient dream pop and experimental post-folk, relying on rich, atmospheric textures, subtle guitar effects, and autumnal melancholia. Aided by her brother Luke Loseth, she released the self-titled Sea Oleena mini album in 2010 followed a year later by a second mini album called Sleeplessness. With her crystalline voice and atmospheric tones, Sea Oleena's music is sometimes compared to acts like Grouper and Julianna Barwick with echoes of dream pop pioneers the Cocteau Twins and a Julee Cruise. Sea Oleena signed with Oregon-based indie Lefse Records to release Shallow in September 2014.

Powaqqatsi (or Powaqqatsi: Life in Transformation) is a 1988 American non-narrative film directed by Godfrey Reggio and the sequel to Reggio's experimental 1982 film, Koyaanisqatsi. It is the second film in the Qatsi trilogy.

Powaqqatsi is a Hopi neologism coined by Reggio meaning "parasitic way of life" or "life in transition". While Koyaanisqatsi focused on modern life in industrial countries, Powaqqatsi, which similarly has no dialogue, focuses more on the conflict in Third World countries between traditional ways of life and the new ways of life introduced with industrialization. As with Koyaanisqatsi and the third and final part of the Qatsi trilogy, Naqoyqatsi, the film is strongly related to its soundtrack, written by Philip Glass.
