People are confusing Maria other girls in the series. She did not take fall for him.

Actual backstory:
They meet because they grew up in the same neighborhood. It was littered in crime and corruption. They fell in love and cut ties with said neighborhood. Got jobs at the mall and were doing ok. Then Maria, for some reason started cheating and doing petty crime by stealing at work. She kept excalating till she got caught and arrested. The show doesnt say whether the baby is his or not. He doesn't know about the cheating. However he was very hurt/betrayed when he found out she was doing crime, because they worked hard to get out of that life/ wanted a better life for their daughter.
