One of the greatest films of all time and CRIMINALLY undervalued. La Mer was the perfect finale. Perfect in so many ways, capturing the very essence of this remarkable, remarkably understated film - its undertow of loss, of losing, of resignation, and - yet - of resolution and resistance and renaissance. Kind of a metaphor for the dear ole UK. Have we ever seen better from Oldman, Firth, Strong, Cumberbatch, Hardy, Hinds, Jones, or Hurt? I think not. Is there a better, tighter, more nuanced, more intelligent, more elegant script out there? I think not. And the score - great God, simply one of the best ever. Best adaptation of Le Carre by any measure. And the astonishingly assured direction of Tomas Alfredson: this guy should be feted, not forgotten. Not omitting to mention the fabulous 70s ambience, the colours, the drabness, the sluggishness of the time - I was a kid then and I remember it all, the green and the brown and the cigarettes and the sentimental pop songs. Thank God for film and for the rare, most rare, work of genius like Tinker, Tailor.

I just have to say- this is one of the best closing sequences in film. Due in no small part to La Mer. Smiley does crack a little smile at the end there, doesn't he? One of the Great Performances, did Oldman give here as Smiley.

Just watched this masterpiece today on Netflix, how did I miss it when it first came. Yes, Oldman deserved Oscar Gold ten's times over. What superb casting and directing.

Watched the movie 4 times before I understood most of it. Read the book to get all the nuances and backstories. Its worth it. This song... everytime I win at something I play it, even if it's just overcoming a bad day! There will NEVER be another spy movie to match it! Its beyond compare, and this song at the end is pure genius!

Seems that we all notice the same details and share what we feel and where and overwhelming… Their final look, the goodbye, the mortal shot, bloody tear, the unspoken hint how to feel about it, along with La mer… That was it for me! I was crushed with remorse and cried…
Masterpiece of a movie! Perfect cast, roles, the storry, … I mean, WOW! Just wow…

The version here is from Julio Iglesias sung in l'Olympia, Paris 26 sept 1976.

Didn't expect this film to have a happy ending, but I'm sure glad it did. Solved the case, became the head honcho and got his wife back, all the while this smooth French groove plays in the background. So satisfying, brilliant!
