Seiko's SRPG39K1 is my pick. It's a perfect first watch because of its high legibility, exhibition case back, and it has just enough flair to be worn on any occasion.

I'll make a case for the Tissot V8. I've owned the watch for about a year and it gets the most wrist time out of any of my other watches I have. The dial certainly could be a little more dynamic however, the subdials and numbering makes the watch interesting and eye-catching especially with the polished area around the minute and hour counters. Unlike the comment featured in the video, the power reserve is around 40 hours which is about what I'm used to with my Seikos with the 7s26/36 movements. I also appreciate the level of attention to detail put into an affordable watch with the date having a black background to match the dial's. The inspiration to the Omega Speedmaster is certainly what drew me to this watch and I do sometimes refer to it as a baby speedy as the Lemania derived movement was modified by Omega for the Speedmaster automatic in th 70's/80's. My main complaints are with the readability as the hands are rather thin and with how the strap has held up over time. I am tempted to change the strap for a bracelet but the milled clasp is too nice to admire to be replaced and be thrown in a drawer to be forgetten about. Overall, I do enjoy the utility I get from having a chronograph on my wrist almost daily from cooking to timing pointless things and do not regret purchasing it as my first swiss watch.

Coincidentally I bought that same Tissot Couturier at 7:56 from Jomashop a couple months ago, and I'm extremely impressed. Tissot was never on my radar before that, but something about this watch caught my eye. The build quality is great, it's comfortable even with its 22mm non-tapering bracelet, pairs well w/casual or dressier clothes, and mine keeps ridiculously accurate time... runs maybe a couple seconds fast in a week. For $259 (w/coupon), you can't go wrong.

Seiko is a great watch no matter what they create, that is why a purchased a manta ray dive watch. As an avid watch collector of over 200 watches. I always gravitate toward purchasing a Seiko or Grand Seiko. Your reviews of watches is great!

The Tissot is impressive value!
If they'd work on the dial a little more they'd have a real gem on hands with that one!
I like everything from the dial outwards...
... the dial itself just looks rather cheap imho, like something you'd find on a Chinese Benyar or something.

I was just casually watching this video while doing stuff for work and then stopped everything when you said there is an automatic chronograph that Tissot makes for under $350. I had no idea this existed and to be honest, didn’t think it was even possible to make. Now I have a new mini grail to save up for.

I recently purchased my first watch in about 20 years, and it was a Citizen Pro Master Diver Titanium, model BN0200-56E. I have been super happy with this piece. I have literally purchased 4 other watches and returned 3 of them, but not this one. It may not be perfect, but it's a lot of watch for the money.
