Vivien's Scarlett O'Hara has got to be one of the best performances i've ever witnessed in my entire life

No CGI, no comic book superheroes - just raw, human emotion.

This scene is so powerful.
I love how the music perfectly matches every mood: the hungry rush to the carrot, the despair falling down to the ground and then the slow raising up, that is both physical and mental as Scarlett realizes her proposition before saying it with tears.
And the selfish, egocentric Scarlett says "nor any of my folk" :)

I also love how Vivien Leigh puts down her arm sooo slowly (after she raised it in anger), as if Scarlett is now too tired but also in peace with herself after this vow.

*Spoiler Alert:* She lies, cheats, steals, and kills after this.

I think it is the greatest scene in the history of cinema

It’s amazing how this story is told through her feminine point of view. In an era where men were the main focus of the majority of books and films, and since it was a Civil War story, it could’ve easily been told through the eyes of a soldier on the battlefield. Instead, Margaret Mitchell broke all ground and gave focus to the women of the war. She, and here the filmmakers, show us the journey of a woman who had to live through that violent era, and how war upended the docile expectations of women at the time and forced them to take action and be independent in order to survive. That has been true in many wars throughout history. This scene sums that up perfectly.

Nobody but Vivien Leigh could have played Scarlett, best casting in the history of cinema in my personal opinion.

1:40 I was overwhelmed with tears at this moment watching this in a restored movie theater from the same era this came out. I thought about what an incredible moment this must have been for moviegoers back then and the message people needed to hear.

Honestly I think the main reason this film still holds up even now is solely because Scarlet is the main character. If it were any other character this film wouldn’t work because it would be seen as a glorification of the Old South. But because it is Scarlet we get a brilliantly told story that shows what people like her went through at that time and proves a convincing cautionary tale for people clinging so much to the past they become a monster to do so. And by Scarlet clinging to the past she ends up leaving a trail of oppression, lies, broken hearts, ruined marriages, and death akin to the drama and tragedy of a Godfather film. But even with all her character flaws you can still relate and sympathize with her situation being in a world that’s taken everything from her and her wanting to reclaim it and survive, and thus people can often find some inspiration from her, making her one of those great anti heroic characters who are the greatest hero and villain of their own story

The scene is rooted in her father's Irishness. From his gravestone you can see he was born in Ireland in the early 1800s and presumably emigrated to the US, possibly during / around the time of the Great Famine. At this stage many Irish people were sadly evicted and many starved (RIP). Hence her fathers obsession with land and her swearing her descendants would never go hungry again. Just my thoughts...

So powerful and full of emotion. Iconic cinema.

The best scene in any movie ever. The emotion and the conviction with the way the lines are said and then the haunting Max Steiner music and that long zoom out. Chef’s kiss.

Back in the day, on the DVD release of GWTW I had, right after this scene was where the DVD had to be turned over for the second half of the film. It was also where the original intermission was and it's four-hour runtime didn't fit on one side of the DVD anyway. So turning it over was necessary.

When I showed it to my parents, who had never seen Gone With The Wind before, I didn't watch it with them as I had already seen it myself many times before. But you can be sure once this scene played and the DVD then instructed the viewer to turn it to the other side to continue to watch, my non tech-savy mom made it to me in no time and basically _demanded_ I turn the DVD over _immediately_ so they could watch on. Of course I happily obliged.

And that's one of the reasons she won the Oscar.
