Dr Duke,
I'm a big fan of yours and I have been following you since 2014 when you made the "Case Against Common Core".
I am a relatively young video game developer, and I wanted to teach you something about video games as a medium.
Many games are mindless wastes of time that are as poisonous as alcohol for young minds, but many of them, specifically, ones with a story to tell or a lesson to be learned are a different story.
Many Japanese role playing games like Shin Megami Tensei, Persona, Final Fantasy, Earthbound, and Chrono Trigger have intricate plotlines and characters that borrow from classical philosophy, pedagogy, mythology, as well as modern psychology. Growing up, these games taught me many lessons that would ultimately shape me as a critical scholar and teacher. The creativity and beauty of their work is far more intellectually stimulating and effective than most any other art in our time.
Many great contemporary thinkers use interactive media like video games as an outlit to teach values and philosophy in a context where the players can actively engage with them.
Besides jrpgs, great surrealist works like Yume Nikki, make you think deeply about the psychology of the protagonist. The ending of Yume Nikki shook an entire generation of kids, inspiring the vast majority of the modern indie game developers today.
As a music composer, I found solace in the unbelievable complexity of early video game music, and their genius has inspired people like me to make intellectually stimulating music that rivals and honors the great composers. Many composers like Nobuo Uematsu were inspired by romanticism and his music has been featured in the FM Classical Music hall of fame charts multiple times.
