a . a . a . a = a^4 such that a is not equal to zero. This mean that the base is multiplied by itself four times, and thus raising it to the fourth power.

A negative exponent is basically a repeated division, which is the inverse of a multiplication.

If the base is similar, then combine like terms i.e. adding the exponents if it is multiplication, and/or subtract them if it is a division.

(a^2)^2 = a^2 . a^2 = a .a .a .a, hence it is raised to the fourth power.
