Today, 140 years ago, one of the most destructive volcanic eruptions in world history occurred. This was the 1883 eruption of Krakatau, which created towering tsunamis and history's loudest sound. #short #shorts #krakatau #krakatoa

If you were within a ~50 mile radius (80km) you were permanently deafened. Imagine suddenly hearing a sound coming from that far away that was so loud. Amazing.

Imagine seeing someone pointing at the sea, screaming, but you're unable to hear them. Not knowing that they're actually screaming about the tsunami.

One of the sources relating the sound intensity was the RMS Norham Castle, a ship located 40 miles away and whose captain wrote: "So violent are the explosions that the ear-drums of over half my crew have been shattered."

This is what got me into volcanology and geology.

there is already a child of Krakatoa growing and getting dangerous now and more: it's Anak Krakatoa which was born (if i remember correctly) in 1926 and is now already more than 400m high. Anak is located nearly at the same spot where the original Krakatoa exploded.

I had to replay that a few times to process the mind-blowing stats 🤯

Thanks. As we saw with Krakatoa's and Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai's eruptions, the mixture of water and an explosive eruption is earth-shattering. I would not be surprised if the explosions of Krakatoa reached 40, 50, or even 80 kilometers in height as estimated, due to how high the eruption column of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai was. I am not a volcanologist or geologist, however, so consult a volcanologist or geologist like Geology Hub. I also find the estimated eruption height of 80 kilometers to be quite a stretch, because the maximum possible column height based on calculations is 55 kilometers. Even then, Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai's eruption reached 58 kilometers, so who knows...

If Hunga Tonga in early 2022 had behaved more exactly like Krakatau in 1883, then that would have become an additional acute world crisis generated in just the past three years, alongside the Covid pandemic and the Ukraine war.

it would have been cool if you put the reenactment of the sound* (thats a thing*)

GeologyHub, there is s field in california known as the Big Pine Volcanic Field in Inyo County California. I would like to hear more about. Please make a video about it. You have already made a video on another volcanic field nearby known as the coso volcanic field, but this one is much more interesting

Now Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha'apai broke this record of loudest sound in recorded history, right? Krakatoa is iconic :D

Your diagnosis is way out of date. Further studies determined that the cause was new silica-rich magma full of gas coming into the magma chamber after the first eruption partially emptied the chamber. The hot gas- rich magma merged with what was there and the explosion eas triggered by the gas pressure exceeding the strength of the roof rocks, kicking off the final eruption.

How many decibels was it, I'd imagine some of the hydrogen bomb testings done come close to the loudest sound ever, and didn't Krakatoa cause a small iceage??
